Baidu Unveils AI Agent OS to Drive Cloud Growth

Baidu has launched China's first "Industrial Agent Operating System," a strategic restructuring aimed at embedding artificial intelligence directly into enterprise production systems to capture the next wave of corporate cloud spending.

Unveiled at the 2026 Smart Economy Forum on Sept. 16, the system marks a critical transition in enterprise AI usage from standalone administrative chatbots to integrated operational engines. The announcement follows Baidu's robust second-quarter earnings, where AI cloud infrastructure revenue surged 50% year-on-year to RMB 7.3 billion (US$1.06 billion), driven by an accelerating 283% spike in GPU cloud revenue.

Market sentiment indicates that cloud infrastructure providers are moving past selling raw computing power. By launching a zero-commission developer platform based on its generic agent Baidu Dazi, the tech giant is aggressively positioning its cloud architecture as an indispensable layer for automated business execution.

Shift to Core Workflows Expands AI Utility

While basic office AI tools have seen rapid adoption due to standardized tasks, they fail to address high-value corporate operations. Shen Dou, Executive Vice President of Baidu Group, categorized enterprise workflows into three tiers: 20% daily operations, 30% professional tasks, and 50% core tasks that dictate business outcomes.

Complex operations such as automotive R&D, financial risk control, and supply chain management require deep integration with historical data, internal regulations, and simulation tools. To address this, Baidu's new operating system organizes AI into a three-tiered architecture: generic agents for basic administrative tasks, professional agents—including Baidu Famou and Wenxin Kuaima—for industry-specific operations, and customized agents tailored to proprietary corporate databases.

Agent Architecture Eliminates Information Silos

The central challenge in industrial AI deployment is preventing the creation of fragmented data pools. Traditional enterprise systems scatter data across ERP, CRM, and bespoke professional software. Baidu's operating system does not intend to replace these legacy platforms; rather, it functions as a connective tissue, converting existing software capabilities into modular skills that AI agents can summon on demand.

This restructuring is already gaining traction across traditional sectors. According to company data, Baidu's AI solutions currently serve over 800 financial institutions, covering all systematically important banks in China and holding the top market share in financial large language models for two consecutive years. The company also maintains a leading position in autonomous driving R&D for mainstream automakers and supports more than 50 companies in the embodied AI sector.

Upgraded Infrastructure Drives Revenue Flywheel

Executing multi-agent, continuous-running tasks fundamentally alters the demands placed on cloud infrastructure. Moving away from simple single-turn query interactions, complex enterprise workflows require sustained state memory, multi-model reasoning, and secure data routing across internal networks.

To support this structural shift, Baidu is deploying a full-stack "Chip-Cloud-Model-Agent" ecosystem. At the hardware level, the third-generation Kunlunxin P800 chips are seeing scaled cluster deployments across finance, manufacturing, and telecommunications. Concurrently, the underlying agent infrastructure now supports over 150 state-of-the-art models with optimized long-context reasoning and built-in security sandboxes.

As AI transitions into an active participant within enterprise workflows, cloud platforms are evolving into fundamental operating bases. The continuous influx of real-world business data feeds back into the models, improving agent accuracy and simultaneously generating higher demands for backend computing power, thereby initiating a self-sustaining commercial growth flywheel.
