Chinese Companies Dominate Global Robot Vacuum Market as US Inventor iRobot Falls to Sixth Place

Chinese manufacturers have seized control of the global robot vacuum market, with the top five companies all based in China and commanding nearly 70% of market share, according to new research from International Data Corporation (IDC). The shift marks a dramatic reversal of fortune for a market originally pioneered by US companies three decades ago.

The Chinese dominance reflects broader trends in the global economy, where domestic manufacturers have systematically overtaken American competitors through heavy investments in research and development rather than price competition. IDC data shows global robot vacuum shipments surged 33% year-on-year in the first half of 2025 to 15.35 million units, highlighting the rapid market expansion.

US pioneer iRobot, founded in 1990 by MIT scientists who invented the technology, has been relegated to sixth place as Chinese brands aggressively expand into high-profit Western markets. The competitive landscape has intensified as new Chinese players including drone maker DJI and appliance giant Midea Group enter the market.

Chinese Brands Lead Through Innovation, Not Price

The success of Chinese manufacturers stems from substantial marketing and R&D investments rather than competing on price alone, according to IDC senior analyst Claire Zhao. On Amazon's US platform, Chinese and American brands are priced similarly, with iRobot's Roomba Vacuum 2 retailing for just $165 in mid-September, placing it among the lowest-priced products.

"Chinese companies have achieved remarkable success in overseas markets, rapidly boosting sales and brand recognition through e-commerce," Zhao noted in the report. "Rapid technological iteration has directly enhanced product competitiveness and user loyalty."

Leading Chinese brands are expanding product portfolios beyond robot vacuums to encompass broader robotic cleaning solutions and integration with smart home ecosystems. Research spending has become a key differentiator, with Ecovacs Robotics increasing R&D expenditure from 549 million yuan in 2021 to 1.34 billion yuan ($186 million) in the first three quarters of 2024.

Market Leaders Expand Global Footprint

Roborock Technology leads shipments in multiple overseas markets including the Nordics, Germany, South Korea and Turkey, where it holds over 50% market share. The company's North American shipments grew 65.3% year-on-year, covering more than 700 cities, while customizing products for local preferences such as carpet cleaning habits.

Ecovacs achieved 35.9% shipment growth and holds 14.1% international market share, leveraging its diversified product matrix and focus on premium segments. The company maintains its domestic market leadership while expanding globally through offline retail advantages.

Dreame Technology captured 25.5% of the European market and recorded strong growth in the Middle East, Africa and North America. Its latest high-end models incorporate artificial intelligence and bionic robotic arm technology to enhance competitiveness.

Rapid Innovation Cycle Drives Competition

Chinese manufacturers are launching new products quarterly or at most every six months, according to Janet Su, a sales manager at a Guangdong appliance manufacturer speaking at the Guangdong Quality Products Exhibition. The new generation of robot vacuums features advanced AI and robotic arm capabilities.

The market opportunity remains substantial, with only 5% of Chinese households owning robot vacuums compared to 15% in the US, according to TF Securities data. This growth potential continues attracting new entrants including Pudu Robotics, a commercial robot startup.

"Although every company faces enormous pressure, this market is still a blue ocean," Su said. IDC projects continued industry growth driven by AI advances and integration of robotic features, despite intensifying competition as new players enter the field targeting emerging markets with low penetration rates.
