DJI Captures 55% Global Handheld Imaging Market, outpacing Insta360 and GoPro

DJI has secured a dominant 55% share of the global handheld smart imaging market, cementing a robust second growth curve beyond its core commercial and consumer drone business.

Driven by a 96% year-on-year market expansion in 2025, the Shenzhen-based technology giant outpaced domestic rival Insta360 and US-based GoPro through aggressive supply-side innovation and deep component customization. A recent 2026 industry report by Jiuqian Consulting indicates that the competitive landscape has fundamentally shifted from marketing-driven sales to foundational hardware engineering.

Market feedback suggests that DJI's strategy of absorbing high initial customization costs to deliver superior image quality has successfully upgraded the product category from basic recording devices to professional creation tools, effectively capturing the surging demand from the outdoor sports sector.

Custom Hardware Redefines Market Boundaries

The global handheld imaging sector—encompassing action, 360-degree, and wearable cameras—is experiencing a period of rapid capacity expansion. Data shows a highly concentrated market where DJI's 55% share nearly doubles that of second-place Insta360 at 30%, while legacy pioneer GoPro trails significantly at 12%.

Action cameras continue to anchor the industry, accounting for 70% of total market capacity. DJI’s Action 5 Pro emerged as the best-selling single product in the domestic market last year. Simultaneously, the company is rapidly scaling its presence in emerging sub-sectors with the Osmo 360 and Osmo Nano, driving broader category expansion and solidifying its comprehensive market leadership.

Supply-Side Innovation Dictates Competitive Edge

Industry analysts attribute DJI's widening moat to its underlying supply-chain architecture. The company custom-developed a square CMOS sensor optimized for a "shoot-first-crop-later" workflow across multiple social platforms. While this approach incurs steep customization costs, it preserves lossless image quality and enhances creator flexibility.

Furthermore, the introduction of the Action 6 model, which features a variable aperture, dismantled the long-standing industry compromise that required fixed apertures for action camera durability. This technological pivot allows the hardware to serve a wider array of professional creation scenarios, proving that supply-side innovation is now the primary growth engine for the sector.

Rising Component Costs Test Margin Resilience

Despite the explosive top-line growth, macroeconomic and supply-chain headwinds persist in 2026. The report warns that rising storage component prices are actively squeezing gross margins across the consumer electronics spectrum.

To navigate these cost pressures, top-tier manufacturers must leverage economies of scale. Maintaining profitability will require a strategic focus on high-margin product lines, robust inventory management, and a highly stabilized new product release cadence to offset upstream volatility.
