Huawei and Baidu Dominate China’s Domestic GPU Cloud Market Amid Push for Self-Reliance

A new analysis of the Chinese technology sector indicates that domestic giants are solidifying their control over the local GPU cloud infrastructure, largely driven by the deployment of proprietary artificial intelligence processors. The shift underscores a broader industry trend toward reducing reliance on foreign hardware in favor of homegrown solutions.

According to a report published by tech news outlet Huawei Central on January 7, 2026, which cites data from market research firm Frost & Sullivan, two major Chinese technology conglomerates captured a combined market share exceeding 70% in the first half of 2025. This dominance highlights the rapid adoption of in-house chips to power cloud-based AI services.

The data reveals that Baidu led the sector with a 40.4% market share, followed closely by Huawei Technologies, which secured 30.1%. Both companies have successfully leveraged their self-developed GPU architectures to expand their cloud service footprints. Alongside Alibaba Group, these firms are reportedly shifting their strategy from merely designing individual chips to creating full-stack hardware and software ecosystems.

Frost & Sullivan noted that these companies are achieving scale through "systematic innovation," integrating thousands of proprietary chips into massive virtual computing pools. This approach aims to challenge established global standards, such as Nvidia’s CUDA platform, by meeting the surging demand for AI training and inference capabilities through domestic supply chains. The report suggests that Chinese firms are positioning themselves not just as strategic alternatives, but as the primary pillars of the nation’s AI infrastructure over the next three to five years.

Despite the rapid market capture, the analysis acknowledges ongoing challenges for the sector. The report points out that China’s domestic GPU market continues to face hurdles regarding raw hardware performance, software ecosystem maturity, and commercial operational efficiency compared to global leaders.

Looking ahead, the consolidation of the GPU cloud market by local players suggests an accelerated decoupling from Western semiconductor technologies. As major players like Huawei and Baidu refine their hardware performance and software integration, the competitive landscape for cloud computing in China is likely to become increasingly closed to foreign vendors, further intensifying the global race for AI supremacy.
