Leapmotor Targets VW’s ID.3 With New EV Lafa5 for Global Expansion
Chinese electric-vehicle maker Zhejiang Leapmotor Technology has unveiled a new electric hatchback at the Munich Auto Show, signaling an aggressive push into Europe and setting ambitious global sales targets to challenge established players like Volkswagen AG.
The new model, named Lafa5, made its global debut on Tuesday. CEO Zhu Jiangming described the vehicle as purpose-built for the company’s globalization strategy and tailored for young consumers. The Lafa5 is scheduled to launch in China in the fourth quarter of 2025, with global sales to commence in 2026.
The launch comes as Leapmotor leverages its partnership with Stellantis NV to rapidly expand its international sales network, which now includes 1,700 overseas outlets. Zhu expressed confidence in achieving monthly sales of 100,000 units next year and suggested a previous goal of 1 million annual sales by 2026 might be "conservative."
Positioned to compete directly with best-sellers in Europe’s compact segment, such as the Volkswagen ID.3, the Lafa5 aims to win over customers with what executives call superior intelligence, space, and comfort. The company is also planning a higher-performance "Ultra" version, drawing parallels to Volkswagen's Golf and Golf GTI lineup.
A 'European Style' EV with Chinese Specs
Presented as a "European-style" hatchback, the Leapmotor Lafa5 features dimensions that place it at the larger end of its class. With a length of 4,430mm, a width of 1,880mm—which Zhu claims is the "widest in class"—and a 2,735mm wheelbase, its size is comparable to A-segment vehicles.
The model incorporates premium design elements such as frameless doors and 19-inch wheels, features that have become increasingly common among Chinese EV brands. A LiDAR sensor mounted on the roof indicates the Lafa5 will be equipped with Leapmotor's latest advanced driver-assistance system (ADAS), likely supporting full-scenario navigation capabilities. The vehicle is built on the company's LEAP 3.5 platform, which also underpins its B10 model and supports an 800-volt architecture for faster charging.
Aggressive Global Sales Strategy
Leapmotor has laid out an aggressive roadmap for growth, with CEO Zhu forecasting that both domestic and overseas sales will at least double in 2026. The company anticipates reaching a key milestone of 100,000 monthly sales next year, bolstered by a planned rollout of five to seven new models for international markets.
Zhu stated his belief that annual sales of four million units represent the entry "threshold for a global car company," indicating Leapmotor's long-term ambitions. The company reports that its current daily order volume has surpassed 5,000 units, while overseas sales are approximately 4,000 units per month, a figure Zhu sees as having significant room for growth.
Leveraging Stellantis Partnership for Scale
A cornerstone of Leapmotor's international expansion is its operational collaboration with Stellantis. The partnership has enabled the Chinese automaker to rapidly establish a global sales channel of 1,700 dealer stores, significantly outnumbering its domestic network of just over 900. This expansive retail footprint is expected to accelerate the company's overseas development and support its high-volume sales targets.
A Playbook of Patience and Price
While outlining ambitious goals, Leapmotor's leadership emphasized a need for patience in new markets. Zhu recalled the company's early years, when the T03 model sold only 10,000 units in its first year before sales grew, a history he sees as a lesson for building a presence abroad.
Leapmotor Senior Vice President Cao Li identified "electrification and intelligence," along with interior space, as the Lafa5's primary advantages over competitors. He noted that while the company's self-developed ADAS for overseas markets will initially focus on core L2 capabilities, its chassis is specifically tuned for European driving preferences, prioritizing handling and driver feel. Citing the company's philosophy of cost-based pricing, Zhu added that the Lafa5’s price would be a "surprise to the market," hinting at a competitive strategy to gain market share.
