Leapmotor Unveils Flagship SUV, Escalating China's EV Price War With Premium Specs
Zhejiang Leapmotor Technology is intensifying the brutal price war in China’s electric vehicle market, unveiling a flagship SUV packed with high-end technology and a massive battery at a price point that undercuts premium rivals.
The company launched its D19, a full-size sport utility vehicle, at an event in Shanghai. The model’s most striking feature is an extended-range electric version equipped with an 80.3-kilowatt-hour battery, offering over 500 kilometers of pure-electric range — roughly double the industry average for such hybrids. The vehicle is expected to be priced around the 300,000 yuan (about $41,400) level, a move poised to challenge established players in the lucrative family SUV segment.
In a bid for technological leadership, the D19 is the first vehicle to feature dual Qualcomm Snapdragon 8797 chips, delivering a combined 1,280 TOPS of computing power. This hardware is designed to support sophisticated in-car AI models and an advanced driver-assistance system based on a Vision-Language-Action (VLA) architecture, reflecting a broader industry shift toward centralized, software-defined vehicle platforms.
The launch signals Leapmotor’s aggressive strategy to seize market share by offering what it calls a superior “quality-price ratio.” By embedding flagship-level specifications in a mid-priced vehicle, the D19 directly pressures competitors like Li Auto, Nio, and an array of other brands fighting for dominance in a crowded market where consumers are increasingly price-sensitive.
An Unprecedented Battery for a Hybrid
Leapmotor is positioning the D19 to redefine standards in the extended-range segment, which has gained popularity in China as a solution to range anxiety. The 80.3 kWh battery in the hybrid model surpasses the capacity of many pure-electric cars. To accommodate the large battery, the vehicle is fitted with a smaller 40-liter fuel tank.
For consumers preferring a fully electric option, a pure battery-electric version will offer a 115 kWh battery pack, enabling a range of over 700 kilometers on a single charge. Both the extended-range and pure-electric models will use batteries sourced exclusively from Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Ltd. (CATL). The hybrid’s battery notably features a mixed chemistry of lithium iron phosphate (LFP) and nickel-cobalt-manganese (NCM) materials within the same cell to balance energy density with longevity. Both versions support fast charging, capable of replenishing the battery from 30% to 80% in 15 minutes.
Premium Ambitions in Design and Build
With a body length exceeding 5.2 meters and a wheelbase of over 3.1 meters, the D19’s dimensions place it in the full-size SUV category, comparable to models like the Mercedes-Maybach GLS. The design emphasizes a minimalist aesthetic with clean surfaces, flush side windows, and distinctive 21-inch wheels.
Underpinning its premium aspirations is a sophisticated chassis featuring a dual-chamber closed-loop air suspension and CDC adaptive dampers. This system enables advanced functions such as active ride-height leveling and a predictive suspension system that can react to road imperfections. The vehicle's body structure utilizes high-strength steel to achieve a high torsional rigidity of 50,500 N·m/deg, enhancing both safety and handling dynamics.
A Bet on Centralized Computing
The D19’s technological centerpiece is its LEAP4.0 central domain controller architecture, powered by two of Qualcomm’s latest 4-nanometer Snapdragon 8797 automotive chips. This setup provides more than double the CPU and GPU performance and ten times the AI processing power of the widely used Snapdragon 8295 chip.
This significant computational headroom is intended to ensure a fluid user experience for the infotainment system over the vehicle's lifespan and to run the powerful AI models required for next-generation assisted driving. Leapmotor plans to leverage this power for both an onboard AI assistant and its VLA-based "world model" for autonomous functions, marking a strategic bet on centralized computing as a key differentiator.
Navigating a Cutthroat Market
The D19 enters one of China’s most competitive automotive segments. The market for large SUVs priced between 300,000 and 600,000 yuan has become saturated in 2025, with automakers vying for customers with ever-larger screens, more luxurious interiors, and aggressive pricing.
Leapmotor CEO Zhu Jiangming stated that the D19 is positioned as a “flagship of flagships” and aims to “rectify” a market segment where product quality and pricing are inconsistent. The model’s aggressive combination of high-end features and a mid-range price point is a clear challenge to rivals, forcing them to re-evaluate their own product and pricing strategies in an unforgiving environment defined by intense competition and shrinking margins.
