Xiaomi Signals Price Hikes as Memory Costs Quintuple

The Beijing-based tech conglomerate disclosed at its 2026 investor day that entry-level smartphones now carry bill-of-materials costs exceeding RMB 1,500 ($208), driven primarily by DRAM and NAND chip expenses surpassing $100 per device. This cost inflation has compressed smartphone gross margins to 8.3% in Q4 2025, forcing management to acknowledge that retail pricing for basic models will likely breach the RMB 2,000 threshold.
"This represents a new industry normal rather than a temporary phenomenon," management stated, according to post-event research notes from Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan, and Citi. The three investment banks reached consensus on the cost pressure reality despite diverging on rating recommendations.
Memory Shortage Reshapes Pricing Strategy
The component cost crisis stems from a global shortage of high-density memory chips, with suppliers prioritizing artificial intelligence infrastructure over consumer devices. For high-end smartphones featuring 16GB RAM and 512GB storage, the BOM pressure intensifies further before accounting for overhead and distribution expenses.
JPMorgan analysts project that "meaningful cost relief remains unlikely over the next 2–3 years," forecasting smartphone gross margins will stabilize in high-single digits through 2027, down from low-double-digit levels maintained during 2023–2025. The firm estimates industry-wide smartphone shipments could contract at least 10% in 2026.
Xiaomi's response centers on premiumization rather than across-the-board price increases. The company shipped 13.35 million high-end devices in 2025, marking 24% year-over-year growth, while management indicated that software optimization to reduce memory footprint remains a priority alongside user retention initiatives.
AI Model Claims Top-Tier Performance
Xiaomi positioned its MiMo-V2.5-Pro language model as achieving parity with leading global AI systems, citing rankings from Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index that place the model first among open-source alternatives alongside Kimi K2.6. The model features over 1 trillion parameters and 1-million-token context windows.
The company's 25-person AI core team—60% graduates of Tsinghua or Peking Universities, 55% holding PhDs—reached competitive performance within approximately one year of formation. Daily token consumption peaks at 1 trillion, with MiMo-V2 paid user conversion hitting 35%, according to Citi's research.
Goldman Sachs highlighted Xiaomi's "full-stack self-development plus cross-layer coordination" as a differentiating factor, spanning proprietary XRING processors, exabyte-scale ecosystem data, modeling infrastructure, tool layers including miclaw and Miloco assistants, and application integration across "human-car-home" device networks.
Management outlined three monetization vectors:

The strategy rests on Xiaomi's Munich R&D and design center, established September 2025, which has recruited over 100 engineers averaging 15+ years experience. Management reaffirmed 2026 delivery targets of 550,000 units (34% growth) with current wait times stabilized at 7–12 weeks.
