Xiaomi Skips a Generation to Challenge Apple’s New iPhone 17

Xiaomi Corp. is launching its Mi 17 series this month, an aggressive move that skips an entire product generation to directly challenge Apple Inc.’s newly released iPhone 17 in the premium smartphone market.

The Chinese electronics giant’s President, Lu Weibing, announced on September 15 that the upcoming Mi 17 series represents the "most significant leap" in the history of its flagship digital line. Chairman Lei Jun amplified the message, stating that the new phones feature a "generational leap in product strength" and are positioned for a "head-on" confrontation with the iPhone.

The new lineup will include the Mi 17, Mi 17 Pro, and Mi 17 Pro Max, all of which will be the first in the world to feature the 5th generation Snapdragon 8 Supreme Edition mobile platform. This places Xiaomi in direct competition with the A19 Pro chip powering Apple's latest devices.

The announcement comes just five days after Apple’s September 10 launch event for its iPhone 17 family. Underscoring its urgency, Xiaomi has already opened reservations for the Mi 17 on its official e-commerce app, signaling a swift response to its main rival in the high-end segment.

A Strategic Leapfrog

Xiaomi’s decision to jump directly to the Mi 17 series is a notable departure from its typical product cadence. The company is bypassing the Mi 16, a model that was widely anticipated for a launch between September 24 and 26. As recently as September 5, Lu had responded affirmatively to a query about the Mi 16's timeline, telling a social media user that it was "coming soon." The sudden shift to the Mi 17 indicates a strategic recalculation aimed at aligning its product cycle more directly with Apple’s. Lu’s announcement post was sent from a device identified as a "Xiaomi 17 Pro Max," confirming the new flagship's readiness.

Doubled R&D for Premium Push

The move is part of a broader strategy initiated five years ago to push into the premium market by benchmarking against Apple. Lu stated that while Apple remains an "outstanding" competitor, Xiaomi is confident enough to challenge it "at the same generation and level." The company is backing this ambition with significant financial commitment to research and development. Having invested over RMB 100 billion yuan (US$13.8 billion) in R&D over the past five years, Xiaomi plans to double that figure to RMB 200 billion yuan for the next five years. Lu promised the Mi 17 series would showcase a series of its latest technological achievements, including "new things" to counter perceived stagnation in smartphone design.

Responding to a ‘Stunning’ iPhone

Xiaomi’s offensive follows an eventful launch from Apple. On September 10, Apple introduced the iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, and a new ultra-thin model, the iPhone Air. The iPhone Air, priced from 7,999 yuan in China, features a thickness of just 5.6 millimeters and a weight of 165 grams, and is powered by the new A19 Pro chip. In a significant global shift, Apple’s entire iPhone 17 lineup will be eSIM-only. Lu himself acknowledged the strength of Apple’s 2025 offerings, commenting after the event that the standard iPhone 17 was "very strong" and describing the iPhone Air as "stunning," predicting it could "reactivate the ultra-thin smartphone market."
