Xiaomi Unveils 17 Ultra Flagship Featuring Advanced Leica Optics and Apple Ecosystem Compatibility
Xiaomi has launched its latest premium smartphone, the Xiaomi 17 Ultra, positioning the device to capture high-end market share through professional-grade imaging hardware and unexpected interoperability with the Apple ecosystem. The release represents the company’s final strategic product launch of 2025, aiming to consolidate its standing in the premium Android segment against domestic and international rivals.
The flagship device centers on a renewed partnership with Leica Camera AG, featuring a "Light Hunter 1050L" 1-inch main sensor equipped with third-generation LOFIC high-dynamic-range technology. Lu Weibing, a senior executive at Xiaomi, emphasized the hardware's capability to challenge 2026 imaging standards, highlighting a 200-megapixel telephoto lens capable of continuous optical zoom—an industry-first implementation designed to improve long-range photography without quality loss.
In a move addressing platform fragmentation, the Xiaomi 17 Ultra is the first to support full control mirroring on Apple Inc.’s iPhones and integration with Apple's desktop environment. This feature targets dual-device users, allowing the Xiaomi handset to be operated directly from an iOS interface, potentially lowering the barrier for iPhone users to adopt Xiaomi hardware as a secondary or primary device.
Pricing for the Xiaomi 17 Ultra starts at RMB 6,999 yuan (US$967) for the base model. Despite global component cost pressures, particularly in memory and storage supply chains, the company limited the price increase to RMB 500 over the previous generation, signaling an intent to maintain competitive value propositions in the flagship tier.
Imaging Technology and Hardware
The Xiaomi 17 Ultra is marketed as a "Peak Imaging Technology Flagship," utilizing a new 1-inch sensor with LOFIC technology that boasts a single-pixel electron capacity 6.3 times greater than its predecessor. This allows for significantly improved dynamic range in both photography and video. The camera system also includes a 200-megapixel periscope telephoto lens using a new 28nm HPE sensor, which reduces power consumption by 40%. The lens architecture supports continuous optical zoom between 75mm and 100mm, extending to 200mm and 400mm through sensor cropping.
Despite the heavy camera hardware, the device features a flattened 2D screen design—a departure from previous curved iterations—and maintains a relatively thin profile of 8.29mm. The phone is powered by Qualcomm’s 5th Generation Snapdragon 8 Elite processor and is supported by a 6800mAh "Jinshajiang" battery with 90W wired and 50W wireless charging capabilities.
Leica Edition and Design Differentiation
Xiaomi also introduced a specialized "Xiaomi 17 Ultra Leica Edition," priced starting at RMB 7,999. This variant differentiates itself through distinct industrial design elements derived from Leica cameras, including a red logo, dual-tone leatherette finish, and a knurled metal frame.
Functionally, the Leica Edition includes a hardware "Master Zoom Ring" integrated into the camera module, allowing users to manually adjust focal length, exposure, and white balance. This model targets photography enthusiasts with exclusive software filters that replicate the color science of legacy Leica sensors, such as the M9 CCD and M3 monochrome profiles.
Wearables and AIoT Expansion
Alongside the smartphone, Xiaomi updated its wearable portfolio with the Xiaomi Watch 5 and Xiaomi Buds 6. The Watch 5, starting at RMB 1,999, features a dual-chip architecture (Snapdragon W5 and BES2800) to balance performance and battery life, offering independent eSIM connectivity and up to 18 days of standby time. The Xiaomi Buds 6, priced at RMB 699, emphasize audio fidelity with a new three-magnet gold-plated driver and integration with Harman Audio tuning.
Pricing Structure
The Xiaomi 17 Ultra is available in three configurations:
- 12GB RAM + 512GB Storage: RMB 6,999
- 16GB RAM + 512GB Storage: RMB 7,499
- 16GB RAM + 1TB Storage: RMB 8,499
The Leica Edition commands a premium, with the 16GB + 512GB model priced at RMB 7,999 and the 1TB version at RMB 8,999. The company also announced high-end home appliances, including the Mijia Central Air Conditioning Pro series, ranging from RMB 25,999 to RMB 51,999, further expanding its smart home ecosystem revenue streams.
