XPeng Posts 'Explosive' Q2 With Margins Surpassing Tesla, But A Weak Q3 Forecast Steals The Show
  • Stellar Financials: Revenue for Q2 2025 surged 125.3% YoY to 18.27 billion yuan (US$2.52 billion), though slightly missing consensus estimates of 18.6 billion yuan due to lower-than-expected service revenue. Net loss narrowed significantly to 480 million yuan from 1.28 billion yuan in the prior year's quarter.
  • Record Margins Eclipse Tesla: The key highlight was gross margin hitting a record 17.3%, unexpectedly surpassing Tesla's 17.2% for the quarter. Vehicle margin nearly doubled to 14.3% from 6.4% YoY, driven by cost optimization and a richer product mix.
  • Deliveries Hit New High, But Mix is Skewed: XPeng delivered a record 103,200 vehicles, a 241.6% YoY increase. However, sales are heavily dependent on sedans (MONA M03, P7+), which accounted for nearly 70% of H1 sales, while its SUVs underperform in a market where rivals see strong SUV demand.
  • The Catch - Tepid Q3 Guidance: Management issued a Q3 delivery forecast of 113,000 to 118,000 units. This figure fell short of market expectations and implies a potential slowdown in August and September, casting a shadow over the launch momentum for the new P7 sedan.
  • Fortress Balance Sheet: The company ended the quarter with a substantial cash reserve of 47.57 billion yuan, providing a strong buffer for continued R&D investment and navigating intense market competition.

Just a year after facing severe headwinds, XPeng Inc. has delivered a second-quarter earnings report for 2025 that, on the surface, signals a dramatic turnaround. The electric vehicle maker posted record-breaking figures in deliveries, revenue, and, most impressively, margins. The market reacted with cautious optimism, with its US-listed shares rising 3.72% in post-earnings trading. However, a look beyond the impressive headline numbers reveals a more complex picture, with a soft third-quarter outlook raising questions for investors.

A Record-Breaking Quarter on the Surface

XPeng's top-line growth was nothing short of explosive. Total revenue for the second quarter reached 18.27 billion yuan (US$2.52 billion), a 125.3% year-over-year jump. This was propelled by a record 103,200 vehicles delivered in the quarter, bringing its total for the first half of 2025 to 197,200 units—surpassing its entire delivery volume for 2024.

Despite this surge, a notable imbalance exists in its product portfolio. Sedans like the MONA M03 and P7+ are the clear workhorses, making up almost 70% of H1 sales. In contrast, its SUV lineup, including the G6 and G9, contributed only 18%. This is a somewhat unorthodox position in the SUV-loving Chinese market, where competitors often see their SUV models, like Tesla's Model Y, vastly outsell their sedan counterparts.

The Margin Story: Overtaking Tesla

The most significant surprise in XPeng's report was its profitability at the gross level. The company achieved a record gross margin of 17.3%, a meaningful increase from the 14.0% reported in the same period last year and, critically, a hair above Tesla's Q2 gross margin of 17.2%.

This was driven by a sharp improvement in vehicle margin, which expanded to 14.3% from a mere 6.4% in Q2 2024. Management attributes this remarkable progress to two primary factors:

  1. Systematic Cost Reduction: Continuous efforts in supply chain optimization and manufacturing efficiencies are bearing fruit, lowering the per-unit cost of production.
  2. Favorable Product Mix: A higher proportion of sales from more premium and profitable models during the quarter helped lift the overall margin profile.

This demonstrates a significant enhancement in XPeng's operational leverage and cost control discipline, a crucial capability in the industry's brutal price war.

The Path to Profitability and The Looming Catch

While still unprofitable on a net basis, XPeng is rapidly closing the gap. The Q2 net loss of 480 million yuan represents a dramatic improvement, having been slashed by over 62% from the 1.28 billion yuan loss a year ago. This steady "bleeding stoppage," combined with management's reiterated guidance for achieving profitability in the fourth quarter, is a strong positive signal. Bolstering this outlook is a formidable cash position of 47.57 billion yuan, a war chest sufficient to fund aggressive R&D and weather market volatility.

However, the positive momentum from the Q2 results was dampened by a cautious outlook. The company's third-quarter delivery guidance of 113,000 to 118,000 vehicles fell short of consensus. This implies an average monthly delivery rate of just 38,000 to 40,000 units for August and September, a potential deceleration that has investors concerned about the sales trajectory of the newly launched P7 sedan. The market is now keenly focused on whether the new P7's pricing will be competitive enough to drive volume or if it will be positioned as a premium brand-builder with more modest sales expectations.

Historically known as a "tech-focused" brand, XPeng is evolving its strategy. While maintaining its core strength in AI and autonomous driving technology—evidenced by the launch of its self-developed "Turing" AI chip—CEO He Xiaopeng is now emphasizing "emotion" and design. The company is making a conscious effort to build a brand that resonates with consumers on an aesthetic and emotional level, not just on technical specifications.

Looking ahead, the primary catalysts and risks for XPeng are clear. The success of the new P7 is paramount. Beyond that, the market may be underestimating the potential of its upcoming extended-range EV (EREV) models based on its "Kunpeng" architecture, including variants of the G9 and X9 MPV. Success in the EREV segment could open up a significant new growth avenue.

While XPeng's Q2 performance marks a commendable comeback, the road ahead in China's hyper-competitive EV market remains challenging. With rivals like Leapmotor (零跑汽车), Zeekr (极氪), and Xiaomi (小米) all making strides toward profitability, the pressure to execute flawlessly has never been higher. Today's stellar margins are impressive, but sustained growth and a clear path to profitability are what will ultimately define XPeng's long-term success.
