Alibaba’s Qwen Launches Spreadsheet Agent, Pushing GenAI From Chat to Deliverable Excel Files

Alibaba Group Holding’s Tongyi Qwen has rolled out a Spreadsheet Agent that generates and edits native .xlsx files through chat, marking a shift from AI that “answers” to AI that “delivers” finished office assets.

The product, announced April 14, 2026, is free across app, web and PC, and is positioned as a workflow rewrite for Excel tasks that typically require manual copy-paste, formatting and formula work. The agent can also pull information via online search and convert photos into editable tables, broadening Qwen’s reach into day-to-day productivity use cases.

For investors, the release signals Alibaba’s continued push to anchor its “agent economy” strategy in practical, high-frequency office scenarios. By completing AI coverage across documents, presentations and spreadsheets, the company is aiming to raise user stickiness and enterprise relevance with tools that reduce the cost of routine data work.

Automating spreadsheet production shifts AI into execution

Unlike chatbots that output text-based tables or rely on fixed templates, the Qwen Spreadsheet Agent creates downloadable Excel files with formulas, conditional formatting and complex layouts inside a conversational interface.
