Avatr Technology Launches Upgraded Avatr 12 with Four-LiDAR System
Avatr Technology, a premium electric vehicle brand backed by Changan Automobile, Huawei, and Contemporary Amperex Technology, has launched an updated version of its Avatr 12 coupe sedan. The new model, which starts at RMB 269,900 (approximately US$37,500), aims to redefine advanced autonomous driving with an enhanced sensor suite.
The key upgrade is the integration of a fourth, rear-facing solid-state LiDAR. This addition provides 360-degree perception, eliminating previous sensor blind spots and improving detection at longer distances and wider angles. The vehicle's advanced driver-assistance system (ADAS), powered by Huawei's Qiankun CAS 4.0, demonstrated strong performance in third-party tests, successfully executing an automatic emergency stop from 90 km/h to avoid a pedestrian-like target.
The updated Avatr 12 also introduces stricter safety protocols for its ADAS. The system cannot be activated if the driver is not wearing a seatbelt, and it will issue an alert if a seatbelt is unfastened during operation. The system also monitors for hands-off-the-wheel events, disabling the ADAS for the current trip if repeated warnings are ignored.
Inside, the vehicle features Huawei's Hongmeng Cockpit 5.0, designed for intuitive interaction. The cabin includes a 35.4-inch panoramic display, a 15.6-inch central screen, and dual Nappa leather zero-gravity front seats. A 25-speaker Meridian sound system, typically an option on higher-priced luxury cars, comes as standard.
The Avatr 12 is offered in both extended-range electric (EREV) and pure battery-electric (BEV) versions. The EREV model pairs a CATL 52kWh battery for a 356km electric range with a total combined range of 1,270km. The BEV model features a 94.5kWh CATL battery, offering a CLTC range of up to 755km. Both support 5C fast-charging, enabling a 30% to 80% charge in 10 minutes.
This product update aligns with Avatr's ambitious growth strategy. The company is targeting annual sales of 220,000 units in 2025, supported by a seven-month streak of sales exceeding 10,000 units through September. Under its "Strategy 2.0," Avatr plans to transition into a smart mobility technology company and launch 17 new models across various segments by 2030.
