Baidu Shares Surge to 20-Month High on AI Chip Venture Success
Baidu shares surged to their highest level since October 2023, driven by growing investor confidence in the Chinese internet giant's artificial intelligence chip business and strategic partnerships. The stock climbed as much as 14% in Hong Kong trading, marking the biggest intraday gain in over two years.
The rally followed an analyst upgrade from Arete Research Services, which lifted its rating on Baidu's American depositary receipts to buy from sell, citing the growth potential of the company's in-house chip venture. Baidu's Kunlun chip unit has demonstrated strong competitive positioning after securing major contracts from China Mobile for AI server applications.
The momentum builds on a broader market reassessment of Baidu's AI strategy, with shares climbing more than 40% this month and outperforming sector peers. Strategic partnerships, including a framework agreement with China Merchants Group, have further bolstered investor sentiment around the company's business transformation efforts.
Kunlun Chip Business Gains Market Recognition
Baidu's chip subsidiary has emerged as a key growth driver after years of internal development. In August, Kunlun secured the largest share in China Mobile's procurement project for AI computing equipment in the "CUDA-compatible ecosystem" category, marking its first major external contract win.
China International Capital Corp. analysts noted that Kunlun's technology capabilities had been underestimated due to its previous focus on serving Baidu's internal operations. The competitive bidding success demonstrates the unit's technical competence against established industry players, particularly in CUDA compatibility features.
Baidu announced at its 2025 Cloud Intelligence Conference in August that Kunlun's super nodes are now operational, making the advanced computing power commercially available to external customers.
Strategic Partnerships Expand AI Applications
The company's collaboration with China Merchants Group, signed on September 15, opens new avenues for AI technology deployment across multiple sectors. The partnership covers applications in technology innovation, transportation logistics, comprehensive finance, and real estate development.
The agreement represents a convergence between China Merchants Group's century-long industrial foundation and Baidu's AI expertise, aimed at accelerating intelligent transformation across traditional industries. This strategic alliance marks a new phase in both companies' cooperation framework.
Analyst Sentiment Shifts on AI Strategy
Investment firms have gradually turned more positive on Baidu's artificial intelligence initiatives following earlier market disappointments. Arete analysts Shawn Yang and Richard Kramer indicated that the chip venture's potential could offset challenges in the company's traditional online advertising business.
Goldman Sachs Group Inc. analysts highlighted in a Tuesday report that Baidu's latest AI model Ernie X1.1 showed "significant improvements" that surpass competing models including those from DeepSeek. The enhanced performance metrics have contributed to renewed confidence in the company's AI development trajectory.
Since August 22, when news of Kunlun's China Mobile contract emerged, Baidu shares have gained approximately 50%, reflecting the market's recognition of the chip business's commercial viability and growth prospects.
