BYD's Hybrid Sedan Seeks to Reclaim Market Share from Geely with Enhanced Features

BYD has launched an upgraded version of its Seal 07 DM-i hybrid sedan, intensifying competition with Geely Automobile in China's plug-in hybrid family car segment. The 2026 model, priced from RMB 149,800 yuan (US$ 21,050) to RMB 186,800 yuan(US$ 26,249), targets buyers seeking premium features over pure affordability.

The move comes four months after Geely's Galaxy Starlight 8 entered the market at 125,800 yuan to 165,800 yuan, with some regional discounts pushing the starting price down to 115,800 yuan. BYD's higher pricing reflects its focus on advanced technology configurations including larger battery options, intelligent suspension systems, and LiDAR-equipped autonomous driving features.

The competition highlights the strategic divide in China's rapidly growing plug-in hybrid market, where manufacturers must balance cost competitiveness with technological differentiation. The outcome could influence pricing strategies across the sector as automakers vie for market share in the lucrative family sedan segment.

Technology Gap Drives Pricing Strategy

BYD's Seal 07 DM-i incorporates fifth-generation DM hybrid technology, delivering a thermal efficiency of 46.06% from its 1.5T/1.5L engines. The system provides up to 230 kilometers of pure electric range under CLTC conditions and 1,585 kilometers of combined range when fully charged and fueled. Fuel consumption drops to just 3.2 liters per 100 kilometers in hybrid mode.

Geely's Starlight 8 uses the Thor EM-P hybrid system with a 1.5T engine and electric motor combination. While ensuring smooth operation, it offers 130 kilometers of pure electric range and 3.67 liters per 100 kilometers fuel consumption when the battery is depleted. The performance gap particularly benefits high-frequency short-distance commuters who can achieve near-zero fuel consumption with BYD's extended electric range.

Autonomous Driving Features Create Clear Differentiation

The most significant difference lies in intelligent driving capabilities. BYD's top-spec Seal 07 DM-i features the "Eye of God" advanced driver assistance system with LiDAR sensors, supporting highway and city navigation functions. Even the entry-level model includes highway NOA functionality, achieving "L2+ from entry level" positioning.

Geely's Starlight 8 provides basic L2-level assistance using single-camera systems. Higher trim levels require additional payment for highway navigation assistance, with no city navigation capabilities available. In smart cabin features, BYD's DiLink 100 system offers comprehensive voice control, smartphone integration, and 3D vehicle control across all variants.

Comfort and Safety Specifications Target Different Priorities

BYD equips the Seal 07 DM-i with MacPherson front and five-link rear suspension, standard Cloud-C intelligent damping control allowing active adjustment between comfort and handling modes. Comfort features span ventilated and heated front and rear seats, heated steering wheel, intelligent cooling/warming refrigerator, and Dynaudio 12-speaker audio systems across trim levels.

Geely's approach emphasizes rear passenger experience with "Queen's Seat" co-driver position and VIP executive rear seats featuring zone massage functions, though without ventilation or heating. BYD demonstrates stronger safety commitment with up to 12 airbags standard and TSC high-speed tire blowout stability control effective at 140 km/h speeds, compared to Geely's nine airbags without confirmed blowout control systems.
