DJI's Upcoming Mini 5 Pro to Pack Professional Features Into Compact Drone

DJI Technology is poised to redefine the compact drone segment with its forthcoming Mini 5 Pro, a model that integrates professional-grade features typically reserved for its larger and more expensive aircraft, according to detailed pre-release information.

The consumer drone giant, which teased a product announcement for September 17, is expected to unveil a drone featuring a 1-inch 50-megapixel sensor—a significant upgrade for its “Mini” series. This enhancement is designed to deliver superior low-light performance and advanced video capabilities, including 4K/60fps HDR recording.

The new model appears positioned to attract both discerning enthusiasts and professional content creators by bundling high-end imaging with sophisticated safety systems. Key among these is an omnidirectional obstacle-sensing system, functional even in night conditions, powered by both LiDAR and visual sensors. This move could set a new performance benchmark for sub-250-gram drones, a category prized for its portability and relaxed regulatory requirements in many regions.

Further blurring the line between consumer and pro-tier equipment, the Mini 5 Pro will reportedly feature an improved 360-degree subject tracking system and DJI’s O4+ video transmission, which extends the operational range up to 20 kilometers. These advancements signal a strategic push to concentrate flagship functionality into its most accessible form factor.

Professional-Grade Imaging in a Compact Body

The Mini 5 Pro’s imaging system is centered around a large 1-inch, 50-megapixel CMOS sensor with a wide f/1.8 aperture, enabling it to capture rich detail and clean images in low-light environments. The drone supports 4K/60fps HDR video with up to 14 stops of dynamic range, suitable for capturing cinematic footage in high-contrast scenes like sunrises and sunsets. For creators seeking dramatic slow-motion effects, the drone also offers 4K recording at 120 frames per second. A new 48mm medium-telephoto mode provides 2x zoom with higher resolution than previous digital zooms in the series, offering greater depth and subject separation in aerial shots.

Advanced Video and Color Capabilities

Targeting professional workflows, the Mini 5 Pro will support 10-bit video recording in D-Log M and HLG color profiles, providing extensive flexibility in post-production. Even in its standard color mode, the drone records 10-bit video using the H.265 codec. The camera’s ISO can be pushed to 12,800, enhancing its performance for nightscape photography. To cater to social media content creation, a 225-degree rotating gimbal allows for "true vertical shooting," producing vertically oriented video without cropping.

Enhanced Flight Safety and Navigation

A significant upgrade comes in the drone’s safety features. The Mini 5 Pro is equipped with a comprehensive omnidirectional visual system, augmented by a front-facing LiDAR sensor, allowing it to detect and avoid obstacles from all directions, even at night. This system is designed to make flights in complex environments, such as urban nightscapes, significantly safer. Furthermore, the drone can reportedly memorize its flight path, enabling a safe return to its takeoff point even if the GNSS signal is lost, a feature particularly useful when launching from locations like balconies.

Smarter and Faster Subject Tracking

The drone’s tracking capabilities see a major overhaul with an improved 360-degree ActiveTrack system. Leveraging L1 + L5 dual-band GNSS for enhanced positioning accuracy, the system can automatically select between "cycling" and "standard" modes to optimize composition. In open environments, the maximum tracking speed has been increased to 15 meters per second. For more complex situations, the tracking algorithm is designed to balance speed and safety, allowing the drone to maintain focus on a subject while navigating its surroundings.

Intelligent Features and Connectivity

The Mini 5 Pro comes loaded with automated flight and shooting modes, including MasterShots and a variety of QuickShots like Dronie, Rocket, and Asteroid, simplifying the creation of dynamic video clips. Connectivity is also improved with support for Wi-Fi 6, enabling file transfers to the DJI Fly app at speeds up to 100 MB/s. The standard intelligent battery will provide a flight time of up to 36 minutes, and a persistent Bluetooth connection allows for rapid pairing without needing to power on the remote controller.
