China's Unitree Launches H2 Robot, Upping Ante in Humanoid Race
Unitree Robotics has unveiled its next-generation humanoid robot, the H2, signaling an aggressive push to advance its technology in the highly competitive field of bipedal robotics.
The new model is taller and significantly heavier than its predecessor, standing 180cm tall and weighing 70kg, according to the company's announcement. The H2 also features a new "bionic face," bringing its appearance closer to the humanoids often depicted in science fiction.
While detailed configurations have not been released, a video demonstration showcased the H2 performing fluid dance and martial arts routines, highlighting marked improvements in flexibility and stability. The robot was also shown wearing clothes, underscoring the company’s focus on a more realistic human form.
The launch builds on the momentum from its predecessor, the H1, which became a viral sensation after a performance at China's Spring Gala in 2024. The H2's debut positions Unitree to further challenge established players in the global race to develop commercially viable humanoid robots.
A More Human-Like Successor
The Unitree H2 marks a significant evolution in design philosophy for the company. At 70kg, it is substantially heavier than the H1 model that weighed approximately 47kg, while maintaining a similar 180cm height. This increase in mass could suggest a more robust frame or larger power systems. The addition of a bionic face represents a clear step toward creating robots that are not just functional but also aesthetically closer to humans.
Building on a Viral Predecessor
The H2's predecessor, the Unitree H1, captured widespread public attention in 2024 following a popular appearance on China's widely watched Spring Festival Gala television special. Videos of the robot performing a traditional dance gained traction both domestically and internationally, raising the company's profile significantly. The H1 was Unitree’s first general-purpose humanoid robot.
H1's Technical Prowess
The H1 set a high bar as China's first full-size general-purpose humanoid robot capable of running. It holds a claimed world record for its mobility speed of 3.3 meters per second, with the company noting a potential for over 5 m/s. The robot was engineered for stable movement across complex terrain, equipped with a 360-degree perception system combining 3D Lidar and a depth camera for real-time spatial awareness. It is powered by a quick-swappable 864Wh battery pack.
