Geely’s Zeekr Takes Aim at Luxury SUV Market With Tech-Packed 9X

Geely Automobile premium electric vehicle brand, Zeekr, has launched a flagship SUV aimed squarely at disrupting the lucrative high-end market dominated by established players like Porsche and Land Rover. The Zeekr 9X, a large hybrid sport utility vehicle packed with advanced technology, is priced aggressively to challenge Western incumbents and has already seen significant initial demand, signaling a new front in the global auto industry's competitive landscape.

The company announced at a Shanghai launch event on September 29 that the plug-in hybrid SUV would start at 465,900 yuan (about $64,000), a fraction of the cost of its legacy rivals. The aggressive pricing appears to have resonated with consumers, as Zeekr reported receiving over 10,000 firm orders within just 13 minutes of the launch.

The launch intensifies pressure on traditional luxury automakers, which are grappling with a market increasingly shifting toward sophisticated and tech-forward electric and hybrid vehicles from China. However, the strong initial sales present an immediate operational challenge for Zeekr, with a reported backlog of over 50,000 pre-orders that could test its production capacity and delivery timelines, potentially impacting customer satisfaction and brand credibility.

The 9X is a core component of Zeekr’s “dual flagship” strategy, alongside its 009 luxury MPV. The company emphasized that its move into the ultra-luxury segment is drawing customers from established brands, noting that 80% of early interest for the 9X came from owners of premium vehicles, with over 70% of them having previously owned cars priced above 500,000 yuan.

Aggressive Pricing, Ambitious Targets

The Zeekr 9X is positioned as a direct competitor to models like the Land Rover Range Rover and Porsche Cayenne, but at a significantly lower price point. It is offered in three main versions: the Max at 465,900 yuan, the Ultra at 485,900 yuan, and the top-tier Hyper at 559,900 yuan. A special "Obsidian Black" edition is priced at 599,900 yuan.

Sized to compete, the 9X measures 5,239mm in length with a 3,169mm wheelbase, making it comparable to the long-wheelbase Range Rover and larger than a standard Cayenne. This strategy of offering comparable size and superior features at a lower price point aims to break the long-standing dominance of foreign brands in China's premium vehicle segment.

Technology as a Luxury Differentiator

Underpinning the 9X is Zeekr’s Haohan-S architecture, a platform developed over four years with an investment exceeding 20 billion yuan. The brand's engineering focus is evident in its Haohan Super Electric Hybrid (SEP) system, described as the world's only hybrid architecture built on a full 900V high-voltage platform.

Key performance specifications include:

  • Powertrain: A 2.0-liter turbocharged engine combined with three electric motors to produce a system output of over 1,030 kW (more than 1,400 horsepower). The Hyper version accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.1 seconds.
  • Range and Charging: A 70kWh battery pack provides a pure-electric range of 380 km (CLTC), with a total combined range of 1,430 km. The vehicle supports 6C ultra-fast charging, enabling a 20% to 80% charge in just 8 minutes and 21 seconds at a compatible station.
  • Chassis and Safety: The chassis features a dual-chamber air suspension and an active anti-roll system. The body structure utilizes a mix of aerospace-grade steel and aluminum alloy, achieving a torsional rigidity of 41,600 Nm/deg, which the company claims is 35% higher than traditional luxury SUVs.

Advanced Intelligence and Cabin Experience

Zeekr has equipped the 9X with a comprehensive suite of intelligent features to create a modern luxury experience. The top-tier Hyper version features the "Qianli Haohan H9" solution, which supports L3 autonomous driving capabilities powered by two Thor-U chips delivering 1,400 TOPS of computing power. Its sensor array includes one long-range and four solid-state LiDAR units, 12 high-definition cameras, and five 4D millimeter-wave radars.

Inside, the cabin is designed around a multi-screen system, including a 50-inch AR head-up display, dual 17.6-inch OLED central screens, and two 15.6-inch entertainment screens for rear passengers. The Zeekr AI OS 7 system powers the interface, supporting proactive services and a responsive voice assistant. The interior is appointed with Nappa leather, recycled carbon fiber, and walnut wood trim, while a 32-speaker Naim sound system with active noise cancellation ensures a quiet cabin environment.

Production Hurdles and Global Rollout

While initial demand is strong, Zeekr faces a significant production test. Deliveries of the first batch are scheduled for late October, but the top-end Hyper version is delayed until late November due to supply chain constraints. With a backlog of over 50,000 units, the company's Ningbo factory is running three shifts to produce an estimated 8,000 vehicles per month, meaning it will likely take until the first half of 2026 to clear existing orders. Zeekr CEO An Conghui stated that the company has secured capacity from key component suppliers to ensure a stable delivery schedule.

Zeekr also plans to take the 9X to international markets, with a European launch slated for 2026. The initial focus will be on Germany and Norway, with an expected starting price of €89,000. For the European market, the hybrid system’s thermal efficiency will be optimized to 46% to meet local emissions standards, with localization support from Geely’s European R&D center.
