Global AI Downloads Hit 350 Million as Alibaba Surges While ChatGPT Momentum Cools
Global native AI application downloads reached roughly 350 million in November 2025, marked by a sharp divergence where established U.S. incumbents saw declining momentum while Chinese contenders, led by Alibaba, aggressively expanded market share through new product launches and heavy marketing spend.
The most significant shift in the landscape occurred with Alibaba’s newly branded "Qwen" app, which surged into top download rankings immediately following its November launch. This aggressive push, accompanied by a spin-off app "Lingguang," contrasts with a continued downward trend for OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini, suggesting an intensifying battle for user acquisition as the sector enters a more mature phase of competition.
Data from market intelligence firm DataEye indicates that while U.S. giants still hold the largest share of the global pie, Chinese challengers are rapidly gaining ground globally and dominating domestically. ByteDance secured half of the top ten spots in China's domestic iOS download charts, signaling a competitive environment where aggressive capital deployment on advertising—particularly by Alibaba and Tencent—is driving immediate user growth.
The shifting dynamics highlight the volatility of the AI application market, with once-dominant players facing saturation or user fatigue. In contrast, new entrants are leveraging massive advertising campaigns to capture traffic, reshaping the leaderboard and threatening the dominance of early movers in both the productivity and entertainment AI segments.
U.S. Incumbents Face Slowdown
Despite retaining the top spots globally, major U.S. AI players showed signs of slowing growth in November. OpenAI's ChatGPT remained the market leader with approximately 79.49 million downloads across Apple’s App Store and Google Play, accounting for 23% of the global total. However, its download numbers slipped by 0.63% compared to October.
Alphabet Inc.'s Google Gemini followed with 57.23 million downloads (17% market share) but suffered a more significant month-over-month decline of 17.52%. The steepest drop was recorded by Perplexity, which saw its daily downloads plummet from a steady 1.3 million in October to approximately 200,000 by the end of November—a contraction of 76.36%. Aside from Elon Musk’s xAI product "Grok," most top-tier non-Chinese apps experienced negative growth.
Alibaba Ramps Up Marketing Spend
In the Chinese market, Alibaba executed a massive pivot with its "Qwen" app. Formerly known as "Tongyi," the app saw its advertising material volume explode by over 13,700% in November following its rebranding. By the end of the month, Qwen’s daily ad material volume reached 60,000 sets, matching the volume of its primary competitor, Tencent Yuanbao.
This heavy investment yielded immediate results. Qwen’s downloads on the Chinese App Store surged 534.92% month-over-month, propelling it to the fourth spot on the domestic download chart and briefly hitting number three on the overall free app list on November 19. DataEye analysts attribute this spike to the combination of Alibaba’s aggressive promotion and user curiosity regarding the new product.
Domestic Market Consolidation
The Chinese iOS market, which saw 27.7 million AI app downloads in November, is increasingly consolidated around three major players: ByteDance, Alibaba, and Tencent. ByteDance’s "Doubao" maintained its lead with a 23% market share, followed by "Jimeng AI" (17%) and Tencent Yuanbao (14%).
ByteDance demonstrated the strongest portfolio depth, occupying five of the top ten positions in the monthly download chart with apps including Doubao, Jimeng AI, and Star Drawing (Xinghui). However, in terms of user acquisition costs and effort, Tencent and Alibaba are outspending the competition. Tencent Yuanbao (46%) and Alibaba’s Qwen (34%) combined for nearly 80% of all ad material volume in the sector for November, vastly overshadowing ByteDance’s organic-heavy approach.
Global Expansion of Chinese Apps
Chinese technology firms are also making significant inroads in international markets. ByteDance’s overseas version of Doubao, branded as "Dola," ranked third globally in combined downloads with 19.19 million installs (6% market share), achieving a 12% growth rate in November. Another ByteDance overseas product, "Hypic," held a 2% global share.
Marketing strategies for these apps are evolving towards specific use-cases. High-performing ad creatives in November shifted from generic AI assistance to specific scenarios, such as Qwen using pet-health consultations via video calls to attract users, and Doubao marketing its ability to supervise children’s homework through real-time camera interaction.
