Google's Project Genie Sparks Selloff in US Gaming Stocks, But Citi Says Impact on Tencent Holdings Limited
Citigroup Global Markets issued a research note on February 1, 2026, addressing mounting investor concerns about whether Google's newly released Project Genie—an AI-powered world-generating platform—poses a competitive threat to Chinese gaming giants. The flash report, authored by analyst Alicia Yap, argues that fears of negative spillover to Tencent are overblown, and that the technology may actually validate the company's parallel efforts in AI-driven game development.
Project Genie Triggers Market Jitters
Google's Project Genie, unveiled on January 30th and built on the company's Genie 3 world model, allows Google AI Ultra subscribers to create, explore, and remix interactive virtual worlds using AI-generated environments. The experimental prototype is currently available only to users aged 18 and above in the United States. The announcement triggered a sharp selloff in US video game stocks on Friday, with investors questioning whether traditional game development models face disruption from generative AI.
The knee-jerk market reaction raised questions about potential read-through effects on Chinese gaming companies, particularly given the sector's heavy reliance on content creation and development pipelines. However, Citi's analysis suggests the concerns are misplaced when applied to China's gaming ecosystem.
Limited Direct Impact on China's Gaming Sector
Citi maintains that Project Genie's impact on China's gaming sector should be limited for several structural reasons. Most significantly, Google services—including AI Ultra—remain unavailable in China unless users employ VPNs, meaning the platform's release should not materially affect how Chinese gamers interact with content. "The release of Project Genie itself should not affect how games users play their games in China," Yap wrote in the note.
More importantly, Citi argues that for Chinese game developers or users seeking to experiment with similar virtual-world creation experiences, Tencent's Weixin Mini Games ecosystem represents the most relevant platform. This ecosystem incorporates WorldPlay functionality, social interaction features, and robust game distribution and sharing capabilities—advantages that position Tencent favorably in the domestic market regardless of developments in Western AI gaming technology.
Tencent's Hunyuan World Model 1.5: A Parallel Innovation
The report highlights Tencent's own AI-driven world-building platform, Hunyuan World Model 1.5 (also known as HY-World 1.5 or WorldPlay), which was released on December 18th, 2025. The open-source AI system generates interactive, real-time 3D virtual worlds from text or images and supports long-horizon 3D reconstruction and virtual world creation.
According to Citi's analysis, the model enables users to build detailed 3D environments from input and create dynamic, narrative-driven experiences through text prompts. "It represents a major leap in open-source world modeling that supports creators and developers to build complex virtual experiences," the report states.
Rather than viewing Project Genie as a competitive threat, Citi suggests its potential success should have positive implications for Tencent's Hunyuan platform. The validation of AI-generated world-building as a viable gaming technology could accelerate adoption of similar tools in China, where Tencent's Mini Games ecosystem provides an established distribution channel.
Valuation and Investment Thesis
Citi reiterated its Buy rating on Tencent with a target price of HK$783 (US$100.26), implying a 30.6% upside from the February 2nd closing price of HK$599.50. The target is based on a sum-of-the-parts valuation approach that applies 22.6x 2026 estimated P/E and approximately 20.5x 2027 estimated P/E.
The firm's SOTP breakdown attributes 24% of the target price to online games (applying 12x P/E to 2027 estimated games net profit of RMB 130 billion yuan, or US$18.1 billion), 27% to online advertising (22x P/E on RMB 82 billion yuan profit), and 25% to social networks (25x P/E on RMB 65 billion yuan profit). Fintech and cloud/business services contribute 11% and 5% respectively, with the investment portfolio accounting for the remainder at a 30% discount to publicly listed equity stakes.
The note carries a Catalyst Watch designation with upside potential expiring April 23, 2026, suggesting Citi expects near-term positive catalysts for the stock. With a market capitalization of HK$5,469 billion (US$699.9 billion), Tencent remains one of the world's largest gaming and technology conglomerates, and Citi's analysis suggests its competitive moat in China remains intact despite emerging AI-driven disruption in Western gaming markets.
