Huawei Backs GigaAI in Latest Bet on China’s Booming Humanoid Robot Sector

Beijing GigaAI Technology, a startup specializing in general embodied intelligence, has secured over RMB 100 million yuan (US$13.7 million) in Series A1 financing. The investment was jointly led by Huawei Hubble, the venture capital arm of Chinese telecom giant Huawei Technologies, and Huakong Fund, marking a significant escalation in capital flowing into China's robotics sector.

This transaction represents the fourth funding round completed by GigaAI in 2025 alone, underscoring the aggressive pace at which investors are backing hardware-software integrated robotics solutions. The deal follows closely on the heels of a substantial Pre-A and Pre-A+ fundraising completed in August, which attracted prominent backers including CICC Capital and Guangzhou Industrial Investment. The company has now closed six funding rounds in total, solidifying its financial runway in a capital-intensive industry.

For Huawei, this move signals a deepening strategic commitment to the embodied artificial intelligence sector. GigaAI becomes the second major robotics startup in Huawei’s portfolio, following its investment in Spirit AI , a company co-founded by former Rokae Robotics executives and Tsinghua University faculty. The investment aligns with a broader industry trend seen in 2025, where global tech giants—including Google, OpenAI, and domestic players like Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. and JD.com Inc.—are shifting from merely empowering models to directly engaging in robot body manufacturing and vertical integration.

The rapid capitalization of GigaAI highlights investor preference for companies that combine proprietary "World Models" with physical hardware capabilities. As the humanoid robot race intensifies, capital markers are increasingly favoring full-stack developers capable of closing the loop between AI decision-making brains and mechanical execution, viewing this integration as the critical barrier to commercialization.

Rapid Capital Injection

The pace of fundraising for GigaAI has been notable even within China’s fast-moving tech ecosystem. Prior to the current Series A1 round involving Huawei, the company secured hundreds of millions of yuan in late August 2025. That dual-tranche round (Pre-A and Pre-A+) saw participation from state-backed and private entities, including China State-Owned Capital Venture Investment Fund (managed by Grand China Capital), Zifeng Capital, and Shenzhen Huaqiang Industry Capital.

Earlier in February 2025, the company closed an "Angel++" round worth tens of millions of yuan. This continuous influx of liquidity suggests strong market confidence in the company’s specific technical approach during a year when domestic giants are accelerating their "investment debuts" in physical AI.

Strategic Shift to "World Models"

GigaAI distinguishes itself through a focus on "Physical AI" driven by World Models—a technology path also being pursued by global leaders significantly such as NVIDIA Corp. and DeepMind. Founded in January 2023, the startup positions itself as China's first technology company dedicated to the intersection of "World Models" and "Embodied Brains."

The company’s architecture relies on a dual-engine approach: a data engine for physical space and a content engine for virtual space. Its core software offerings include the GigaWorld platform, which applies to both autonomous driving and embodied robotics, and GigaBrain, a Vision-Language-Action (VLA) foundation model. In October 2025, GigaAI, in collaboration with the Hubei Humanoid Robot Innovation Center, released GigaBrain-0, a VLA model that utilizes synthetic data generated by world models to achieve "zero-shot" generalization in complex robot operations.

Full-Stack Hardware Integration

Beyond software, GigaAI is advancing its own hardware capabilities, a move that aligns with the industry's shift toward vertical integration. The company is preparing to launch the Maker H01, a new generation general-purpose humanoid robot. The unit features open interfaces and a rich sensor suite designed to work seamlessly with the Giga series software framework, facilitating efficient data collection and model deployment.

This strategy of developing both the "brain" and the "body" addresses a key bottleneck in the sector: the fragmentation between AI algorithms and mechanical control. By controlling the full stack, the company aims to improve the generalization capabilities of its robots—allowing them to perform tasks in unstructured environments without extensive retraining.

Leadership and Market Competitiveness

The company’s technical direction is steered by a team with deep roots in both academia and industry. Founder and CEO Huang Guan, a doctoral graduate from Tsinghua University with experience at Microsoft and Samsung, leads the venture. Chief Scientist Zhu Zheng, a researcher from the Chinese Academy of Sciences, brings significant academic weight with over 70 papers in computer vision.

Despite the high valuation and rapid progress, the sector remains in a developmental phase. While the "World Model" architecture is forcing a paradigm shift in decision-making logic for robots, significant challenges remain regarding data acquisition, the "black box" nature of AI decision-making, and true generalizability. Investors are currently betting that full-stack players like GigaAI will eventually build a technical moat, though industry analysts note that the path to a commercially viable, mass-produced "robot brain" remains long and technically arduous.
