Huawei Challenges Apple in Compact Tablet Market with New MatePad Mini

Huawei is set to launch its MatePad Mini tablet today, marking a direct challenge to Apple Inc.'s iPad Mini in the compact tablet segment as the Chinese tech giant expands its product portfolio amid growing market demand.

The 8.8-inch device features ultra-narrow bezels with a 92% screen-to-body ratio, positioning it against Apple's iPad Mini 7, which is known for its wider bezels. The MatePad Mini incorporates an OLED display with 2800×1752 resolution and 120Hz refresh rate, compared to the iPad Mini's 8.3-inch Liquid Retina display offering 2266×1488 resolution at 60Hz.

Huawei's tablet will be powered by the Kirin 9020 flagship chip, with benchmark scores exceeding 12,000 points. The device supports 5G connectivity and allows users to make calls and send messages with independent SIM card functionality, addressing consumer demand for phone-capable tablets.

The MatePad Mini includes a 6,500mAh battery with 66W fast charging, outpacing the iPad Mini's 5,400mAh battery and 20W charging capability. The device integrates with Huawei's HarmonyOS ecosystem, enabling seamless connectivity across smartphones, PCs, and automotive systems.

Market analysts expect the MatePad Mini to launch at approximately 4,000 yuan (US$555), competing directly with the iPad Mini’s current promotional price of 3,599 yuan (US$500) after discounts.

The compact tablet market is experiencing significant growth, with global high-performance small tablet shipments reaching 3.2 million units in 2024. Industry forecasts project shipments will increase to 4.6 million units in 2025 as Chinese brands introduce new products and government subsidies support consumer purchases.

Huawei's entry intensifies competition in the segment as domestic manufacturers challenge Apple's dominance. The launch comes ahead of Apple's upcoming product announcement, potentially reshaping the compact tablet landscape as consumers weigh hardware specifications against ecosystem preferences.

The MatePad Mini launch demonstrates Huawei's strategy to capture market share in premium consumer electronics despite ongoing international challenges, leveraging its domestic ecosystem advantages and 5G capabilities to differentiate from international competitors.
