Huawei Expands Mate 70 Series with New 'Air' Variant
Huawei has quietly added a new model to its flagship smartphone lineup, the Mate 70 Air, signaling a potential strategy to target a broader market segment. The device appeared in the product database of a Chinese telecom operator without a formal announcement.
According to the listing, the Mate 70 Air features a 6.9-inch display with a 1920x1200 resolution, a specification that points to a more budget-conscious positioning compared to its premium siblings. The phone will run on the company’s proprietary HarmonyOS 5.0 and will be available in black, white, and silver. Two configurations were listed: one with 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage, and another with 12GB of RAM and 512GB of storage.
The "Air" model's specifications mark a clear departure from the high-end standard Mate 70. For comparison, the original Mate 70 launched with a higher-resolution 2688x1216 OLED display, a more advanced camera system, and faster charging capabilities. The standard model was priced at launch from RMB 6,499 yuan (approximately US$903).
The timing of this release is notable, coming shortly before the expected launch of Huawei’s next-generation Mate 80 series later in 2025. The introduction of a lower-spec Mate 70 variant could be a strategic move to capture more of the mid-range market or to utilize existing components ahead of the new flagship debut.
Key details such as the processor, camera specifications, and battery capacity for the Mate 70 Air have not yet been disclosed. These unconfirmed specifications will be critical in determining the device's final price and competitive positioning in the market.
