Huawei Eyes September Mate 90 Launch in Direct Clash With Apple

Chinese tech giant Huawei Technologie may break from its recent November release pattern and launch its upcoming Mate 90 series smartphones as early as September or October this year, according to speculation circulating among industry observers.

According to a report by Huawei Central published on January 8, 2026, Weibo tipster @FixedFocus suggested that the company could revert to its traditional launch timeline for the flagship series, potentially bringing the release forward by one to two months from the November slot used in recent years.

The speculation stems from improvements in Huawei's 5G chip production capabilities. Another tipster cited in the report indicated that the company's product release rhythm could normalize in 2026 after production delays that forced later launches in previous years. Huawei had delayed the Mate 70 series to late November 2024 and maintained that schedule through 2025 to manage Kirin chip manufacturing constraints.

Historically, Huawei released its Mate series between September and October, including the Mate 20 in October 2018, Mate 30 in September 2019, Mate 40 in October 2020, and Mate 50 in September 2022. This pattern shifted with the Mate 60 series in late August and early September 2023, which marked the return of Kirin 5G chips to the market.

Some observers speculated the Mate 90 series could be announced in September with market availability following in October, though no official confirmation has been provided by Huawei.

If realized, the earlier launch would signal Huawei's strengthened supply chain position and could intensify competition in the premium smartphone segment during the key fall shopping season. The move would also align with Apple Inc.'s typical September iPhone launches, potentially creating a direct clash between the two manufacturers.
