Huawei has secured the top position in the global 5G patent race, commanding leadership in a licensing market valued at approximately $15 billion annually, according to a new industry report that underscores China's growing dominance in next-generation telecommunications technology.

LexisNexis released its "Who is Leading the 2026 5G Patent Race" report on January 27, providing a comprehensive assessment of the competitive landscape in 5G standard-essential patents. The analysis, which evaluated patent volume, asset quality, and contributions to 3GPP standards, placed Qualcomm Inc. in second position, followed by Samsung, Ericsson, and other major players, indicating a stable hierarchy among industry leaders.

The findings reveal a significant shift in global telecommunications intellectual property, with Chinese companies claiming five of the top ten positions. The concentration of patent holdings among leading firms has direct implications for licensing negotiations and the cost structure of 5G devices and infrastructure worldwide.

Chinese manufacturers have established a commanding presence across the patent rankings, with 14 mainland Chinese companies appearing in the top 50 positions, compared to nine from the United States and nine from Japan.

Huawei's Dual Advantage in Volume and Standards

Huawei demonstrated leadership across multiple dimensions, securing first place in both the number of 5G patent families and contributions to 3GPP-related standards. This dual strength reflects systematic advantages in both technical coverage breadth and participation in standard-setting processes, providing the company with structural leverage in long-term licensing negotiations.

According to recent ETSI data referenced in the report, Huawei holds 11,314 patent families, significantly ahead of Qualcomm's 8,448. The company's extensive portfolio covers core aspects of 5G technology, positioning it as a central player in the licensing ecosystem that underpins the $15 billion annual market.

Qualcomm's Quality-Over-Quantity Strategy

While Qualcomm trails Huawei in patent family volume, the U.S. chipmaker ranked first in the 5G patent asset index, indicating higher average technical impact and commercial value per patent family. This quality advantage reflects patents with elevated citation rates and broader technical influence, enabling Qualcomm to maintain strong bargaining power in terminal chips, communication modules, and related segments.

The company's high-value patent portfolio explains its sustained revenue generation capability within the 5G licensing framework, despite holding fewer total patents than its leading competitor. This approach prioritizes strategic patents covering critical technological nodes over sheer volume.

China's Expanding Patent Footprint

Chinese companies occupy half of the top ten positions in the global 5G patent rankings. Beyond Huawei, the list includes ZTE Corp. (中兴通讯), vivo, China Information and Communication Technologies Group Corp./China Telecommunications Technology Co. (中国信科/中信科移动), and OPPO.

South Korea placed two companies in the top ten—Samsung and LG Electronics—while Europe contributed Ericsson and Nokia. The United States was represented solely by Qualcomm in the leading tier.

In the broader top 50 rankings, mainland Chinese companies claimed 14 positions, followed by nine from the United States, nine from Japan, seven from Europe, five from Taiwan, five from South Korea, and one from Canada. This distribution marks a notable shift from earlier generations of mobile technology, where Western and South Korean companies held more concentrated dominance.

Explosive Growth in Patent Filings

Global authorized 5G public patent families have experienced explosive growth since 2012, rising from 1,441 families in the initial year to 66,583 by the end of 2025. The trajectory showed particularly sharp acceleration after 2019, coinciding with commercial 5G network deployments worldwide.

This sustained increase reflects intensifying research and development investments across the global mobile communications industry, as companies race to secure intellectual property positions in technologies spanning 5G, 5G-Advanced, and emerging 6G standards. The patent accumulation patterns suggest continued high-stakes competition in setting technical standards and capturing licensing revenue streams.

Market Implications

The patent landscape directly influences the economics of 5G deployment and device manufacturing. Companies holding essential patents can demand licensing fees from equipment makers and network operators, creating recurring revenue streams independent of hardware sales.
