Huawei Opens Pre-Orders for Nova 15 Handsets to Bolster Mid-Range Lineup

Huawei Technologies Co. has commenced pre-orders for its nova 15 smartphone series, set to officially launch on December 22. The move signals the Chinese tech giant's aggressive push to consolidate its foothold in the premium mid-range handset market following the recent release of its flagship Mate 80 series, effectively completing its product portfolio for 2025.

The new lineup, comprising the nova 15, nova 15 Pro, and nova 15 Ultra models, integrates high-end specifications previously reserved for flagship devices. Key upgrades include the adoption of second-generation "Red Maple" mixed-spectrum imaging technology and the return of proprietary Kirin processors across the entire range, underscoring Huawei's continued recovery in supply chain self-sufficiency and semiconductor capabilities.

Investors and analysts are watching the launch as a gauge of consumer appetite for Huawei's mass-market devices running the latest HarmonyOS 6 operating system. The series emphasizes a strategy of differentiating through hardware and software synergy, featuring native AI capabilities and satellite communication functions even in non-flagship tiers working to capture users upgrading from older generations.

Customers can now reserve the devices through Huawei’s online mall, e-commerce platforms, and offline retail channels with a deposit of 100 yuan (US$14). While specific pricing tiers remain undisclosed until the launch event next week, the rapid follow-up to the Mate series suggests Huawei is aiming to maximize sales momentum ahead of the Lunar New Year shopping season.

Flagship-Tier Hardware Integration

A focal point of the nova 15 series is the migration of flagship-grade components to the mid-range sector. The standard nova 15 model is reported to run on the Kirin 8 series chipset, while the Pro and Ultra variants will upgrade to the more powerful Kirin 9 series processors. This shift aligns the performance capabilities of the high-end nova models more closely with the Mate and Pura series, potentially creating a "sub-flagship" category for performance-oriented consumers.

In the imaging department, the series is expected to mark a historic first for the product line by implementing the Red Maple original color lens technology on both front and rear cameras, specifically for the Pro and Ultra models. This technology, aimed at precise color restoration and handling high-contrast scenarios, mimics the spectrum capture capabilities introduced in the Mate series. The Ultra model will feature a 50-megapixel main camera with a large 1/1.3-inch sensor and a dedicated periscope telephoto lens, specifications typically absent in standard mid-range offerings.

Design Overhaul and Power Metrics

Detailed product renders released by Huawei indicate a significant design departure for the higher-end models. While the standard nova 15 retains a vertical elliptical camera layout, the Pro and Ultra versions adopt a bold, horizontal matrix camera module. The Ultra model is showcased in a distinctive green colorway featuring a textured back panel and a coordinated color scheme across the frame and deco areas, designed to maximize visual differentiation.

To address power consumption demands from higher performance chips and AI processing, Huawei has substantially increased battery capacities. The standard model is expected to house a 6,000mAh battery, while the Pro and Ultra variants are upgraded to 6,600mAh packs. Charging speeds have also been standardized at a high level, with the entire series supporting 100W wired fast charging. The Ultra model exclusively supports 80W wireless charging, a feature that remains rare in this price segment.

Ecosystem and Connectivity

The software experience is anchored by HarmonyOS 6, which emphasizes deep integration with artificial intelligence agents. The "XD PORTRAIT" logic embedded in the camera system suggests AI-enhanced computational photography, particularly for low-light environments.

Connectivity remains a core differentiator for Huawei. The nova 15 series will include Beidou satellite communication support across all models, democratizing a feature once exclusive to the most expensive handsets. This inclusion reflects a broader industry trend where satellite connectivity is moving from a niche emergency feature to a standard specification in Chinese smartphones.
