BYD Previews Two New Flagship Models to Expand Premium EV Offerings
BYD Co. officially released teaser images for two new vehicles, the Seal 08 and Sealion 08, during its annual Ocean Day event on Sunday evening. The Chinese automaker announced that the new models are scheduled to make their public debut in the first quarter of 2026, marking a significant expansion of its product lineup in the premium segment.
Zhang Zhuo, General Manager of BYD's Ocean series, stated that both vehicles draw design inspiration from the Ocean-S concept car initially unveiled at the Shanghai Auto Show. The new models are designed to integrate the company's "ocean aesthetics" with advanced technology, targeting a futuristic and distinct visual identity.
The Seal 08 is positioned as a sport coupe, featuring a low-profile body and a fastback design consistent with the concept vehicle. Key specifications include a body length exceeding 4.9 meters and a wheelbase surpassing 3 meters, intended to maximize interior space. The vehicle incorporates hidden door handles and slim light clusters to emphasize its athletic styling.
In contrast, the Sealion 08 focuses on the family SUV market. The design includes distinctive silver trim, split headlamps, and large air intake ducts. The vehicle features a fuller side profile and a slight roofline dip to balance aesthetics with passenger headroom. It is expected to offer six- or seven-seat configurations to meet family utility demands.
These launches are strategic components of the Ocean series' push into the high-end market. BYD aims for the Seal 08 and Sealion 08 to cover the core mid-to-high-end price range of 200,000 yuan to 300,000 yuan (US$27,580 to US$41,370). The new entries are designed to complement the automaker's existing "Dynasty" series, creating a differentiated product matrix to secure market share.
