JD.com to Launch EV Priced Around $15,000 in Partnership With GAC, CATL

JD.com Inc. is set to enter China’s competitive electric vehicle market with a co-branded car, a major move by the e-commerce giant to expand from online retail into auto-industry involvement. The new vehicle signals JD.com’s ambition to leverage its vast digital ecosystem to challenge established automakers and sales models.

The car, developed jointly with Guangzhou Automobile Group, also known as GAC Group, and a subsidiary of battery maker Contemporary Amperex Technology, or CATL, is expected to be priced between 100,000 yuan ($13,800) and 120,000 yuan, according to people familiar with the matter cited by The Paper.

Set for an official launch during JD.com’s annual Singles’ Day shopping festival, the vehicle will be sold exclusively on the company’s platform. The move positions JD.com to directly convert its massive online traffic into sales of high-value items, intensifying competition in the mainstream EV sector. For investors, it highlights a growing trend of tech giants deepening their engagement in the automotive supply chain beyond simple e-commerce listings.

Targeting the Mass Market

The estimated price range of 100,000 to 120,000 yuan places the "JD Car" squarely in the most crowded segment of China’s EV market. By entering this price bracket, JD.com will compete directly with numerous established players. The company is betting that its brand recognition and exclusive online sales channel will provide a significant edge, particularly with a launch timed to coincide with its massive "Singles' Day" sales event.

'Chocolate' Battery-Swapping Technology

A key feature of the new vehicle will be its battery-swapping capability, based on a solution developed by CATL. The technology is marketed as "Choc-SEB" (Swapping Electric Block), nicknamed for its modular, chocolate-bar-like battery blocks. The automated process allows drivers to swap a depleted battery for a fully charged one in about 100 seconds without leaving their vehicle, initiating the swap via a mobile app. This feature aims to alleviate common EV owner concerns about range anxiety and long charging times.

A Three-Way Alliance

The project is reportedly based on a vehicle from GAC's electric car brand, Aion. The partnership creates a closed loop from manufacturing and technology to retail. GAC Group is expected to provide the vehicle architecture and manufacturing expertise, while CATL’s battery-swapping unit, EVOGO, will supply the core power technology. JD.com will act as the lead coordinator and exclusive sales channel, directly connecting the product to its enormous consumer base.
