JD.com's Budget EV Fetches $10.8 Million in Promotional Auction, Highlighting Auto Ambitions

JD.com Inc.’s foray into the world's largest electric vehicle market is drawing massive attention, after a promotional auction for the first unit of its co-branded budget car fetched a stunningly high bid. The event highlights the e-commerce giant’s strategy to disrupt China’s competitive auto industry not by manufacturing cars, but by leveraging its vast logistics network and online retail platform.

The first production model of the "Aion UT Super," an electric vehicle developed jointly with Guangzhou Automobile Group Co., Ltd. and battery maker Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Limited, attracted a final bid of RMB 78.19 million yuan ($10.8 million) in an online auction on Oct. 22. The price represents a premium of nearly 780 times the car's expected retail price of between 100,000 and 120,000 yuan.

The legitimacy of the sale remains in question, as bidders were only required to pay a 100-yuan deposit, which is forfeited if the winner defaults on the payment. In a statement on Oct. 23, JD.com said it was actively contacting the highest bidder and would make "appropriate arrangements" for the vehicle if the payment is not completed, suggesting the auction was primarily a marketing event.

Regardless of the outcome, the four-hour auction succeeded in creating significant online buzz for the new vehicle ahead of its official sales launch on Nov. 9. The event signals JD.com's serious intent to carve out a niche in the automotive sector by transforming the car-buying process into an experience as seamless as purchasing consumer electronics.

A High-Stakes Marketing Gambit

The auction, which started with a token bid of 1 yuan, was designed to maximize public engagement. It attracted over 270,000 viewers and accumulated 23,733 bids before its conclusion. The abnormally high final price has been widely interpreted as a successful, if unconventional, marketing campaign.

In response to the outcome, JD.com announced it would provide a gift package worth 399 yuan to every participant who made a bid and subsequently purchases the car. The company also pledged to award a free vehicle to the bidder whose offer came closest to the car’s final retail price, further reinforcing the event’s promotional nature. The strategy effectively secured widespread media coverage and public discussion, vaulting the new model into the national spotlight.

Behind the Hype: A Budget EV Contender

The vehicle at the center of the frenzy, the Aion UT Super, is positioned as a highly competitive offering in the budget EV segment. The five-seat sedan is set to be sold exclusively on JD.com's platform, and over 19,000 prospective buyers have already made reservations.

Developed in partnership with established auto and battery industry leaders, the car features a 2,750mm wheelbase, promising interior space comparable to a B-segment vehicle. It is powered by CATL's swappable "chocolate" battery blocks, enabling a range of up to 500 kilometers and a battery exchange time of just 99 seconds. Other specifications include an infotainment system co-developed by GAC and Huawei Cloud, and a reinforced
