Kingsoft Office Q1 Net Profit Skyrockets 444% as Early Zhipu AI Investment Pays Off

An early venture capital bet on artificial intelligence unicorn Zhipu has masked slowing domestic user growth at Kingsoft Office , propelling the Chinese software giant's first-quarter 2026 net profit up 444.97% year-on-year to RMB 2.195 billion (US$318.1 million).

The Beijing-based software developer released its Q1 2026 financials late April 23, revealing an adjusted net profit—which strips out one-off investment gains—of RMB 580 million (US$84 million), a more grounded 32.17% increase. Revenue climbed 23.95% to RMB 1.613 billion (US$233.7 million), driven largely by the aggressive commercialization of AI features in its enterprise software suite.

While the headline profit surge is capturing retail attention, institutional investors are analyzing the company's deeper structural shifts. Faced with a saturated domestic smartphone market, Kingsoft Office is pivoting its core growth engine toward Southeast Asia, linking executive compensation strictly to overseas expansion for the first time in its 2026 incentive plans.

Zhipu IPO Drives 30-Fold Investment Return

The glaring disparity between Kingsoft Office's reported and adjusted net profit stems from a RMB 1.937 billion (US$280.7 million) investment yield, representing a 27-fold increase from the same period last year. This windfall traces back to August 2024, when Kingsoft Office invested RMB 150 million (US$21.7 million) into Zhipu's Series B funding round via two affiliated private equity funds.

Following Zhipu's successful public listing in Hong Kong in the first quarter of 2026, Kingsoft Office's stake of 5.21 million shares swelled in value. Based on Zhipu's closing price of HK$1,028 on April 23, the holding is now valued at approximately HK$5.357 billion, delivering a return of more than 30 times the initial capital.

Despite the liquidity injection, Kingsoft Office management cautioned markets about the volatility of venture returns, warning that fluctuating macroeconomic conditions and secondary market valuations could lead to quarterly investment losses in the future, urging investors to focus on core operations.

Enterprise Cloud Shields Stagnating Mobile User Base

Beneath the investment windfall, Kingsoft's core software business is navigating a transition phase. The company’s global monthly active devices (MAU) for WPS Office reached 672 million by March 31, 2026. However, while PC MAU grew 9.08% to 328 million, mobile MAU contracted by 0.47% to 344 million, a direct casualty of declining global smartphone shipments in early 2026.

To offset mobile saturation, the company is extracting more revenue per user through AI monetization. Personal business revenue rose 13.80% to RMB 975 million (US$141.3 million). The real growth engine remains the B2B sector. The WPS 365 enterprise business generated RMB 244 million (US$35.3 million) in Q1, marking a 60.79% year-on-year jump and sustaining a >60% growth rate for five consecutive quarters.

This enterprise momentum is heavily supported by a massive R&D expenditure, which consumed 35.43% of total revenue at RMB 572 million (US$82.8 million) in Q1. March 2026 saw the rollout of the "Xiao K" digital employee and "WPS 365 Qingzhou AI," a localized, private AI solution designed for data-sensitive corporate and government clients.

Overseas Expansion Anchors 2026 Equity Incentives

Recognizing the growth ceiling in mainland China, Kingsoft Office is aggressively targeting Southeast Asia. The company's international strategy revolves around establishing local channel networks, integrating with global cloud providers, and offering customized enterprise digitalization tools in the ASEAN region.

In a strong signal of strategic intent, the company's 2026 restricted stock incentive plan, released alongside the earnings report, explicitly ties executive rewards to international performance. The plan mandates that 2026 overseas revenue must reach at least 150% of the 2025 baseline to trigger the first vesting period. Furthermore, the cumulative overseas revenue from 2026 to 2028 must hit 712.50% of the 2025 figure, setting a steep compound annual growth requirement that indicates Kingsoft's urgency to diversify its geographic revenue streams.
