Chinese technology conglomerates are aggressively repositioning themselves in the robotics sector, transitioning from passive investors to active hardware developers as the embodied intelligence market accelerates toward commercial deployment.
Eight core tech giants executed 62 robotics investments in 2025 alone, deploying between RMB 14.5 billion and RMB 34 billion ($2.01–$4.72 billion), according to IT Juzi's embodied intelligence investment analysis. The sector attracted total funding of RMB 73.5 billion ($10.2 billion) across 744 deals through year-end 2025, per China's Embodied Intelligence Development Report.
This marks an intensification of strategic positioning that began in 2014, when major internet platforms including Alibaba, Baidu, and Tencent first targeted robotics capabilities. The investment thesis has fundamentally shifted: tech companies now view robotics not as speculative R&D but as critical infrastructure for physical-world operations.
Meituan Leads Deal Volume With Supply Chain Focus
Meituan has completed over 20 robotics investments since 2014, prioritizing delivery automation and last-mile logistics. The food delivery giant's autonomous vehicles now operate 64 drone routes, completing over 600,000 orders, while ground-based delivery robots have entered routine deployment in select Chinese cities.
Tianfeng Securities calculates Meituan's unmanned drone lifecycle costs at RMB 84,500 ($11,736), with monthly operating expenses around RMB 1,400 ($194)—representing 75–90% savings versus human couriers. At scale, this technology could eliminate billions in labor costs.
Alibaba follows with 17+ portfolio companies, while Tencent holds 15+ stakes and ByteDance controls 10+ positions. Among smartphone manufacturers, Xiaomi and Lenovo have each invested in 18+ robotics firms, while automakers SAIC, NIO, and BYD maintain strategic positions in 7+, 4+, and 4+ companies respectively.
Star Startups Attract Competing Corporate Backers
Multiple tech giants now co-invest in leading robotics unicorns, abandoning traditional exclusivity arrangements. Autonomous robot developer Zibianling (Autonomous Variable) secured nearly RMB 2 billion ($278 million) in Series B funding in April 2026 from Alibaba, ByteDance, Meituan, and Xiaomi simultaneously. Quadruped specialist Unitree Robotics counts seven corporate backers.
This collaborative approach reflects robotics' distinctive economics. Unlike digital platforms where network effects create winner-take-all dynamics, physical robotics requires manufacturing scale, supply chain integration, and vertical-specific deployment knowledge—assets distributed across different corporate parents.

JD.com and Meituan prioritize near-term operational deployment. JD.com showcased warehouse automation and smart retail solutions at the 2025 World Robot Conference, while Meituan's delivery network provides continuous real-world testing infrastructure.
Platform Builders:
Alibaba, Baidu, ByteDance, and Tencent position themselves as cognitive infrastructure providers. Alibaba's Damo Academy open-sourced the RynnBrain embodied intelligence foundation model in February 2026, outperforming established benchmarks across 20 embodied AI tests. The company's Amap unit deployed the "Tutu" quadruped robot powered by ABot architecture, integrating years of physical-world mapping data with dual foundation models ABot-NO and ABot-M0.
Baidu leverages its Wenxin large language model and Baidu Intelligent Cloud GPU platform, partnering with Zhiyuan Robotics on research-focused development tools. ByteDance released Seed GR-3, a vision-language-action model requiring minimal demonstration data for task adaptation, while building API and SDK infrastructure for developer ecosystems.
Tencent maintains the most conservative positioning. CEO Pony Ma stated the company aims to partner with all robot manufacturers rather than compete in hardware. Tencent's RoboticsX lab launched Tairos in July 2025—China's first modular embodied intelligence platform offering large language models, development tools, and data services as software infrastructure.

Xiaomi and XPeng leverage automotive supply chains to enter robot manufacturing directly. Their production capabilities and component sourcing networks position them as potential contract manufacturers for robotics unicorns while developing proprietary platforms.
Supply Chain Becomes Competitive Battleground
Honor's "Lightning" humanoid robot won the Beijing Yizhuang half-marathon in 50 minutes 26 seconds—nearly seven minutes faster than the human world record—triggering immediate stock rallies among component suppliers. The market response signals investor recognition that robotics success depends on supply chain maturity, not just software capabilities.
By 2026, China's embodied intelligence sector has moved beyond technology demonstration into commercial viability assessment. The critical question is no longer which company builds the fastest robot, but which ecosystem can sustain scaled manufacturing, continuous software improvement, and diversified application scenarios simultaneously.
