Meizu Bets on Compact Design With Meizu 22, Citing Chip Cost Pressures

Meizu is making a calculated bet on the premium compact smartphone segment with its latest flagship, the Meizu 22, focusing a premium design and camera system while making a strategic compromise on its processor to maintain a competitive price point. The move highlights the intense margin pressures facing smaller manufacturers in a market dominated by larger rivals.

Meizu Technology unveiled the Meizu 22 at a launch event on September 15, pricing the device from 2,999 yuan (US$421). The smartphone is powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8s Gen 4 chipset, a decision the company explicitly stated was made to avoid the significant price increases that would have resulted from using a top-tier processor.

Alongside the launch, Meizu announced a significant strategic shift, declaring it will streamline its portfolio to release only a single digital-series flagship model annually and discontinue its higher-spec "Pro" line. This consolidation, combined with a pragmatic approach to component selection, signals a refined strategy to navigate the hyper-competitive Chinese smartphone market.

The launch of the Meizu 22 serves as a market test for whether a focus on niche features—including its signature white front panel and robust camera array in a small form factor—can attract consumers in the absence of a best-in-class chipset, directly challenging the spec-driven conventions of the flagship category.

A Strategy of Compromise

During the launch event, Meizu provided a transparent look into the economic trade-offs of its component choices. The company stated that opting for a more powerful Snapdragon 8 "Supreme Edition" processor would have added 1,000 yuan to the retail price. Alternatively, waiting for the next-generation Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 would have increased the cost by 1,300 yuan and delayed the product's release by six months.

By selecting the Snapdragon 8s Gen 4, Meizu is positioning the 22 as a device that delivers a balanced flagship experience without passing on substantial costs to the consumer. This decision reflects the difficult choices smaller brands must make to compete on both features and price against vertically integrated giants.

Premium Features in a Small Package

The Meizu 22 is built around what the company calls a "golden size" 6.3-inch display, targeting users who prefer a more compact handset. Its design emphasizes ergonomics with a 71mm width, 190g weight, and a balanced aluminum alloy and glass construction. The device notably retains the brand's white front bezel, a feature Meizu suggested may be the "last generation" of its kind due to the manufacturing complexity with increasingly narrow 0.8mm borders.

The phone features a 6.3-inch 1.5K LTPO display from CSOT with a 120Hz refresh rate and a peak brightness of 6,000 nits. Other hardware specifications include an ultrasonic in-display fingerprint sensor, stereo speakers, an IP66 and IP68 rating for dust and water resistance, NFC, and an infrared blaster, with the top-tier model also including UWB connectivity.

Focus on Camera Upgrades

Meizu has significantly upgraded the camera system, positioning it as a key selling point. The device is equipped with a versatile triple-camera array on the rear, featuring a 50-megapixel OV50H main sensor with OIS, a 50-megapixel Sony IMX882 3x periscope telephoto lens with OIS, and a 50-megapixel OV50D 122° ultra-wide-angle camera. The front-facing camera also uses a 50-megapixel OV50D sensor.

The company described the hardware as the most powerful camera system it has ever deployed. On the software side, new features include an AI-powered function that can extract and replicate the filter from any photograph, with Meizu promising continuous OTA updates to enhance imaging capabilities and add new functions.

Pricing and Model Variants

The Meizu 22 is powered by a 5510mAh battery, supporting 80W wired and 66W wireless charging. While competitive, the battery capacity is more conservative than some rival compact models released in 2025, which have featured batteries as large as 6260mAh.

The device is available in several configurations:

  • 12GB + 256GB: 2,999 yuan
  • 16GB + 256GB: 3,299 yuan
  • 12GB + 512GB: 3,399 yuan
  • 16GB + 512GB: 3,699 yuan
  • 16GB + 1TB: 4,199 yuan

A "Return Voyage - Chinese Flagship Limited Edition" was also announced, with design elements inspired by the Fujian aircraft carrier, including a customized case, user interface theme, and accessories.
