Mercedes-Benz Invests in Autonomy Startup Qianli to Tackle China’s EV Race

Mercedes-Benz AG is taking a stake in Qianli Technology, a Chinese autonomous driving startup with ties to Zhejiang Geely, in a strategic push to accelerate its intelligent vehicle development in the world’s most competitive auto market.

The investment marks a significant step in the German luxury automaker's efforts to deepen its roots within China's local self-driving supply chain. The move is designed to provide Mercedes-Benz with faster access to localized research and development resources, aiming to shorten the deployment cycle for its advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS).

The deal underscores the immense pressure foreign automakers face from a new generation of domestic rivals. Chinese players including Nio Inc., Li Auto Inc., and Xiaomi Corp., alongside technology giants like Huawei Technologies Co., are rapidly advancing in intelligent driving and in-car software, setting a pace that legacy carmakers have struggled to match.

By partnering with Qianli Technology, which is already a key technology supplier within the Geely ecosystem, Mercedes-Benz is forging a complex tripartite alliance. This collaboration signals a potential new model for global carmakers in China, moving beyond traditional joint ventures to more integrated technology partnerships to remain competitive across different market segments.

An Answer to Local Rivals

For Mercedes-Benz, the investment is an accelerator aimed at closing the competitive gap in a market that is both its largest and the global forefront of automotive intelligence. The company’s traditionally cautious and lengthy R&D timeline has become a liability in the face of nimble local competitors who are relentlessly iterating on ADAS and smart cockpit features.

The pressure on Mercedes-Benz is twofold. On one side are the domestic EV makers who have built significant market buzz and consumer appeal around their advanced software capabilities. On the other are technology firms like Huawei and Baidu Inc. that are deeply penetrating the auto sector with comprehensive hardware and software solutions. By embedding itself with a local tech firm, Mercedes-Benz aims not only to acquire technology but also to adopt a faster, more market-responsive development approach.

Inside Qianli's Technology

Qianli Technology provides Mercedes-Benz with access to a portfolio of scalable autonomous driving solutions tailored for the Chinese market. The company’s "Hao Han" series demonstrates its ability to cater to different vehicle segments and levels of automation.

Its Hao Han H7 solution is designed for mass-market, high-level ADAS applications, balancing cost-effectiveness with a comprehensive feature set through a multi-sensor fusion approach. The H7 system is modular and scalable, enabling rapid deployment in mid- to high-end vehicles while maintaining cost control. In contrast, the Hao Han H9 solution targets the premium end of the market, including future Robotaxi applications. It features a larger sensor array, enhanced perception for complex urban environments, and an end-to-end algorithm optimized for superior safety and redundancy.

A Tripartite Synergy

The involvement of Geely transforms the investment from a simple capital injection into a strategic synergy. Qianli Technology serves as a crucial intelligent driving-solutions provider for Geely’s own ambitious push into smart vehicles, creating a platform for multi-level collaboration.

The partnership enables a powerful combination of complementary strengths. Mercedes-Benz contributes its deep expertise in global safety standards, vehicle architecture, and systems integration, along with its powerful brand presence in the luxury market. Qianli Technology offers localized technology that understands China’s unique road conditions and regulatory landscape, while Geely provides the mass-market vehicle platforms and manufacturing scale necessary to drive down costs through volume. This structure could see mature, cost-effective ADAS features deployed across Geely’s mid-range models while more advanced systems are co-developed for Mercedes-Benz’s luxury lineup.

A New Model for China

The alliance between Mercedes-Benz, Geely, and Qianli Technology may serve as a blueprint for other multinational automakers navigating China's fast-evolving market. The era of relying solely on traditional joint ventures is fading as local technology companies become indispensable partners in the industry's software-defined future.

By taking a direct stake in a local tech player, Mercedes-Benz is adapting to a new reality where deep integration is essential for survival and growth. However, this new model also presents future challenges, as the three parties will need to navigate a complex balance of interests regarding R&D control, technology roadmaps, and profit-sharing. As intelligent driving moves closer to commercialization, the question of who ultimately defines the product and sets the standards will become a central point of negotiation.
