Nio Unveils 2026 Product Roadmap, Headlined by New ES9 Flagship SUV
Nio Inc. is launching an aggressive product offensive in 2026, centered on the debut of its new flagship ES9 SUV and an expansion of its mass-market brand, Onvo. The strategy aims to bolster the company’s position in both the premium and mainstream segments of China’s highly competitive automotive market.
The centerpiece of the plan is the ES9, a large luxury SUV set for a technical unveiling in April, according to company Chairman and CEO William Li. The model is slated for a market launch and price announcement in late May, with customer deliveries beginning on June 1. The ES9 is designed to solidify Nio’s standing in the high-end EV space, targeting a lucrative but challenging segment.
Alongside the flagship launch, Nio will refresh its core volume models and expand its sub-brand portfolio. The company’s mass-market Onvo brand is scheduled to launch its new L80 model in May, following a technical event in April. Meanwhile, Nio’s existing “5566” series of mid-size vehicles will receive minor facelifts this year to maintain their competitiveness.
This multi-pronged product strategy underscores Nio's response to fierce domestic competition and slowing sales growth. By targeting a specific niche with the high-end ES9 while refreshing its mainstream offerings, the company is looking to capture a wider customer base and enhance its market share throughout 2026.
The ES9 Flagship's Market Debut
Nio is positioning the ES9 to lead its product lineup. Li stated in January that the ES9 aims to be the "most competitive pure-electric model" in its price category. While official pricing is unconfirmed, the model is expected to target the RMB 500,000 (US$69,500) premium segment, positioning it above the current ES8, which is priced from RMB 406,800 to RMB 446,800. The detailed timeline—an April 9 technology conference followed by a May launch and June 1 deliveries—signals a rapid go-to-market schedule.
High-Tech Specs to Define the ES9
The ES9 will serve as a showcase for Nio’s latest technology. The flagship SUV will be equipped with a 5nm automotive-grade chip for autonomous driving, the company’s proprietary SkyOS vehicle operating system, and the SkyRide Intelligent Chassis System, which integrates steer-by-wire, rear-wheel steering, and a fully active suspension.
Dimensionally, the ES9 is a large SUV, measuring 5,365mm in length with a 3,250mm wheelbase. It will feature three LiDAR units as part of its AQUILA Super Sensing system. The vehicle is powered by a dual-motor, all-wheel-drive system with a total output of 520kW. Equipped with a 102kWh battery pack, the ES9 will offer CLTC-rated range options of 580km, 600km, and 620km.
Targeting a Premium Pure-Electric Niche
Nio’s strategy with the ES9 appears focused on a specific market opening. While it will compete for premium buyers with models like the Aito M9 and Zeekr 9X, those vehicles are predominantly sold as extended-range electric vehicles (EREVs) or hybrids. By launching the ES9 as a pure-electric model, Nio is targeting a gap in the large luxury SUV segment, potentially facing less direct competition and increasing its chances of success.
Updates Across the Product Lineup
Beyond the new flagship, Nio is also updating its existing portfolio. The “5566” series—comprising the ET5 sedan, ET5T wagon, ES6 SUV, and EC6 coupe SUV—will receive minor facelifts in 2026. These models, particularly the ET5T which sells well in the RMB 300,000 price range, form the backbone of Nio’s current sales volume.
A key challenge noted is the platform difference. The updated “5566” models will remain on the 400V architecture, while new vehicles like the ES9 are built on a 900V platform. This requires Nio to maintain and support both 400V and 900V systems across its signature battery-swapping network, adding a layer of operational complexity. Concurrently, Nio's value-focused Onvo sub-brand will introduce the L80, a new mid-to-large SUV, aiming to capture a different market segment from its existing L60 and L90 models.
