Novosense Debuts in Hong Kong at HK$18.7 Billion Valuation Backed by BYD, Xiaomi and State Capital
Novosense Microelectronics, a leading Chinese analog chip manufacturer, commenced trading on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange on Monday, achieving a market capitalization of HK$18.7 billion. The debut marks a significant step for the Jiangsu-based company as it secures international capital to fuel its expansion amid China’s broader push for semiconductor self-sufficiency.
The listing garnered support from high-profile cornerstone investors, including investment vehicles linked to electric vehicle giant BYD and smartphone maker Xiaomi. Notably, Novosense became the first analog chip company to receive cornerstone backing from the "Big Fund Phase III," the third phase of China’s National Integrated Circuit Industry Investment Fund, signaling distinct state-level endorsement.
Shares opened flat at the offer price of HK$116 per share. The company, which maintains a listing on Shanghai’s STAR Market, reported that the dual listing is aimed at enhancing its underlying technology platforms and expanding its overseas sales network following a surge in revenue driven by the automotive sector in 2025.
This IPO underscores the growing maturity of China's domestic semiconductor supply chain. By the first half of 2025, Novosense had cemented its position as the largest Chinese automotive analog chip supplier by revenue, reflecting the rapid localization of critical components in the world's largest EV market.
state-Backed Capital and Industry Giants
The global offering involved approximately 19.07 million H-shares. Seven cornerstone investors subscribed for a total of HK$1.09 billion, representing a significant vote of confidence from both industry players and state capital.
Key investors include Golden Link, an affiliate of BYD, and Green Better, associated with Xiaomi. Additionally, Yuanhe Novosense, a subsidiary ultimately backed by the Big Fund Phase III, participated in the subscription. This lineup suggests that downstream industry leaders are increasingly moving to secure their upstream supply chains through equity stakes.
Financial Performance and Automotive Surge
Novosense has seen robust top-line growth driven by the burgeoning electric vehicle market. In the first half of 2025, the company reported revenue of RMB 1.52 billion (US$209 million), a 79.5% increase compared to the same period in the previous year. This growth was primarily attributed to sustained demand in automotive electronics and a recovery in industrial automation.
Despite the revenue jump, the company remains in a loss-making position due to high R&D expenditures and market competition, posting a net loss of RMB 78 million (US$10.7 million) in the first half of 2025, though this narrowed significantly from previous years. Gross margins stood at 32.9%, reflecting price adjustments made to maintain competitiveness in a fierce market environment.
Dominating Niche Markets
Founded in 2013 by Peking University and Fudan University alumni, Novosense has established itself as a top player in specific analog niches. According to 2024 data, the company ranks fifth overall among Chinese analog chip manufacturers but holds the top spot among domestic firms in automotive analog chips, digital isolation chips, and magnetic sensors.
The company has aggressively expanded its portfolio through both R&D and acquisitions. In 2024, Novosense acquired a controlling stake in MagnTek, a Shanghai-based magnetic sensor specialist, consolidating its financials later that year. As of mid-2025, the company offered over 3,600 product models, with automotive electronics accounting for 34% of total revenue.
Future Outlook and New Frontiers
The capital raised will support Novosense's strategy to diversify beyond standard consumer and automotive applications. The company has indicated plans to develop products for emerging high-barrier markets, including humanoid robots and electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft.
While China’s analog chip market reached RMB 195.3 billion (US$26.8 billion) in 2024, the localization rate in the automotive sector remains low at approximately 5%. This gap presents a substantial growth opportunity for domestic leaders like Novosense as they continue to erode the market share of international incumbents through competitive pricing and localized service.
