UBS Raises CATL Price Target to HK$640 on Booming Heavy Truck and Energy Storage Demand
UBS Securities Asia Limited has sharply raised its price target for Contemporary Amperex Technology to HK $640 from HK $495, citing stronger-than-expected demand for electric heavy-duty truck batteries and energy storage systems. The October 22, 2025 report, which increased 2026 earnings estimates by 11%, underscores CATL's position as a key beneficiary of the global electrification trend—even as the company faces mounting competition in its home market.
The move is worth noting for several reasons: CATL's H-shares have already more than doubled since their IPO in May 2025, the company maintains industry-leading profitability with Q3 2025 net margins at 17.8%, and UBS now values the battery giant alongside tech heavyweights including BYD, TSMC, and Tencent.
Lithium Price Normalization Opens New Markets
According to UBS analyst Paul Gong, the catalyst for the upgrade is straightforward: "After lithium price normalisation and battery price deflation since 2023, applications of batteries into e-HDT and ESS are increasingly affordable." The report notes that improving battery-swapping infrastructure for heavy trucks, combined with rising ESS demand from wind/solar installations and AI data center growth, is driving volume expansion beyond traditional passenger EVs.
The firm now forecasts CATL will achieve 638 GWh in battery sales for 2025 and 790 GWh in 2026, with earnings growth of 19-38% through 2027. Notably, UBS sees limited upside from further margin expansion, with unit profit holding steady at approximately RMB 112 per kWh (US$15.40 per kWh). "We see less earnings upside from profitability expansion, as compared to volume growth," the analysts wrote.
Market Share Pressures and Tariff Threats
Not everything is smooth sailing. CATL has ceded 3 percentage points of domestic market share year-to-date, with its position falling to 43% in the first nine months of 2025 from 46% in the same period of 2024. UBS attributes this partly to capacity constraints and partly to the rise of budget electric vehicles from smaller battery makers.
The firm expects CATL to potentially regain share in 2026 through new capacity rollout and potential EV product mix upgrades. More concerning is the scheduled 25% US tariff on energy storage systems in 2026. However, UBS believes "the company could be largely immune to the tariff headwind" given strong AI data center demand and CATL's competitive positioning in ESS products.
Domestic policy support for passenger EVs is also retreating heading into 2026, though UBS expects accelerating EV exports to support CATL's international expansion, particularly with the Hungarian plant launch scheduled for early 2026.
Valuation: Trading at a Discount to Tech Peers
UBS's new HK$640 price target is based on 30x 2026E P/E, up from its previous 26x multiple. The firm argues this is justified given CATL-H shares currently trade at 26x 2026E earnings—below the 30x average for tech leaders including BYD, LG Energy Solution, Xiaomi, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company, and Tencent.
"Considering its global leadership in technologies, and continuous growth in the European EV market after the Hungarian plant launch in early-2026, we see further valuation upside," the report states.
Perhaps the most striking comparison: CATL-H's market capitalization of US $318 billion remains just one−fifth that of Saudi Aramco′s US $1.6 trillion, despite the company's central role in the global energy transition. Since the Hong Kong listing, CATL-H shares have traded at a 20-45% premium over the A-shares, suggesting international investors remain more bullish on the company's global competitiveness.
In UBS's upside scenario—assuming 850 GWh of battery sales in 2026 and unit profit of RMB 115/kWh—the stock could reach HK $830. The downside case of HK $350 assumes just 660 GWh in sales and compressed margins, applying a 20x P/E multiple.
With CATL-H currently trading at HK$544, the risk-reward appears skewed 1.5:1 to the upside, at least according to UBS's math. Whether that materializes will depend on the company's ability to navigate intensifying competition at home while capitalizing on surging demand for energy storage globally.
