Huawei's HarmonyOS 6 Bridges Gap with Apple to Lure iPhone Users
Huawei has launched HarmonyOS 6, the latest version of its proprietary operating system, introducing native data transfer capabilities with Apple's iOS devices in a strategic move to attract users from the rival ecosystem.
Announced at a special event on October 22, the new feature allows for seamless, high-speed data sharing between HarmonyOS and iOS devices without requiring a network connection, utilizing near-field communication technology. Huawei's consumer business chairman, Richard Yu, stated that the update aims to break down barriers between devices and enable a freer flow of data. This system-level integration marks a deeper level of interoperability than previously seen from other smartphone manufacturers.
The move is seen as a direct response to the challenges facing Huawei's "native" HarmonyOS, which no longer supports Android applications. This transition has reportedly caused hesitation among potential customers concerned about app availability and data migration. Reports have indicated slower-than-expected sales for devices like the Pura 80 series, launched in June 2025, partly due to these concerns. By enabling direct connectivity with iPhones, Huawei aims to lower the psychological barrier for users, positioning its devices as synergistic partners rather than replacements.
This strategy mirrors a broader industry trend in China, where smartphone makers are actively targeting Apple's substantial user base. Competitors, including Xiaomi, OPPO, and vivo, have already implemented features to improve compatibility with Apple's ecosystem, from iCloud data synchronization to enhanced CarPlay experiences. The shared goal is to convert loyal iPhone users or encourage them to adopt a second device from another brand.
Beyond simple compatibility, Huawei is positioning HarmonyOS 6 as a next-generation intelligent operating system. The update introduces an enhanced AI assistant powered by the company's Pangu and DeepSeek large language models, offering advanced functionalities. Extending connectivity to Apple's user base allows Huawei to broaden the reach of these AI services, accelerating the evolution of HarmonyOS from a connectivity platform to a comprehensive smart ecosystem.
While this step is significant, its success will depend on delivering a smooth cross-platform user experience and ensuring robust data security and privacy. Nonetheless, the initiative underscores Huawei's open-ecosystem strategy and its ambition to compete directly for high-value users in the premium smartphone market.
