US Plans to Restrict Imports of Chinese Drones and Heavy Vehicles Amid Security Concerns

The Trump administration is preparing new regulations that would restrict or potentially ban imports of Chinese drones and medium-to-heavy vehicles, according to a media report citing national security concerns.

According to Reuters' report published on September 7, the measures would expand existing restrictions already imposed on Chinese automotive imports.

The US Commerce Department announced Friday that it plans to introduce regulations as early as this month to address national security risks posed by information and communication technologies in drones and their supply chains. The proposed rules would also target vehicles weighing over 10,000 pounds from "foreign adversary" countries including China. The department has not yet provided specific details about the import restrictions, and neither the Commerce Department nor the Chinese Embassy in Washington immediately responded to requests for comment.

Chinese-manufactured drones currently dominate US commercial drone sales, with more than half coming from DJI, the world's largest drone manufacturer. The proposed restrictions on drones and heavy vehicles build upon similar regulations already planned for automobiles and other trucks.

The Biden administration finalized rules in January 2025 that would essentially ban all Chinese cars and trucks from entering the US market starting in late 2026, targeting Chinese vehicle software and hardware. At that time, the Commerce Department indicated it might impose future restrictions on drone systems, including onboard computers, communication and flight control systems, ground control stations, operating software, and data storage devices.

The US launched national security investigations into drones and related components in July 2025, while probes into medium and heavy vehicles and their components began in April 2025. These investigations could potentially result in higher tariffs on affected products.

The expanded restrictions signal the Trump administration's continued focus on limiting Chinese technology imports across multiple sectors, potentially reshaping supply chains for commercial drones and heavy vehicle manufacturers operating in the US market.
