Xiaomi Recalls Nearly 117,000 Electric Vehicles Over Autonomous Driving Safety Concerns

Chinese smartphone giant Xiaomi's automotive division has initiated a significant recall of its electric vehicles with Chinese authorities under the country's defective automobile product recall regulations, due to safety issues with its advanced driver assistance systems.

The recall affects 116,887 units of the SU7 Standard Edition electric vehicles manufactured between February 6, 2024, and August 30, 2025. The affected vehicles were found to have potential safety hazards related to their Level 2 highway navigation assisted driving functionality.

The company identified that under certain extreme scenarios, the vehicles' autonomous driving systems may inadequately recognize, warn, or handle specific situations when the L2 highway pilot assist function is activated. This deficiency could increase collision risks if drivers fail to intervene promptly, creating substantial safety concerns for vehicle occupants and other road users.

To address the identified issues, Xiaomi will implement a software solution through over-the-air (OTA) technology updates. The company stated that all affected vehicles within the recall range will receive free software upgrades remotely, eliminating the need for physical visits to service centers.

This recall represents a significant challenge for Xiaomi's relatively new automotive venture, which entered the competitive electric vehicle market as part of its diversification strategy beyond smartphones and consumer electronics. The SU7 model has been positioned as a key product in the company's automotive lineup.

The incident highlights ongoing concerns about the reliability and safety of advanced driver assistance systems in the rapidly evolving electric vehicle sector. As automakers increasingly integrate sophisticated autonomous driving features, regulatory scrutiny over these technologies continues to intensify globally.

The recall could potentially impact Xiaomi's automotive business momentum and market confidence as the company seeks to establish itself as a credible player in China's crowded electric vehicle market.
