Xiaomi has intensified China’s hyper-competitive electric vehicle market by simultaneously launching a high-margin, record-breaking performance SUV and an entry-level model priced aggressively below Tesla Inc.’s Model Y.
The dual-launch on May 22, 2026, marks a strategic pivot for the Beijing-based tech giant. Chief Executive Officer Lei Jun introduced the YU7 GT, priced at RMB 389,900 (US$54,152), serving as a technological halo product aimed at premium buyers. Concurrently, Xiaomi reinstated a previously axed standard YU7 version at RMB 233,500—undercutting Tesla's base Model Y by RMB 30,000.
This barbell pricing strategy signals Xiaomi’s transition from a smartphone maker testing automotive waters to a tier-one EV manufacturer optimizing for both volume and profitability. The public debut of former Tesla Gigafactory director Song Gang as a key Xiaomi executive further underscores the company’s intent to scale production efficiencies to match its US rival.
Engineering Premium Pushes Margin Boundaries
The YU7 GT represents Xiaomi’s aggressive push into the high-margin performance segment, a space traditionally dominated by European legacy automakers. The vehicle initially set a Nürburgring SUV lap record of 7:34.931 before Xiaomi revealed an even faster officially timed lap of 7:22.755 during the launch event.
Powered by an 897V Silicon Carbide (SiC) high-voltage platform and a 101.7kWh ternary lithium battery, the GT delivers 1,003 horsepower and a 0-100km/h acceleration of 2.92 seconds. Xiaomi is leveraging deep supply chain integration to justify the premium price tag, equipping the vehicle with its proprietary V8s EVO rear motor—capable of 28,000 rpm—and Akebono six-piston calipers paired with carbon-ceramic brake discs.
On the software front, the GT functions as a rolling computational platform. It integrates Nvidia Corp.’s 700 TOPS Thor chip and LiDAR sensors to power Xiaomi’s XLA cognitive large model, enabling advanced highway and urban autonomous navigation. By capping the fully loaded GT model at RMB 429,900, Xiaomi is testing the upper limits of consumer willingness to pay for domestic EV brands in 2026.
Reinstating Base Model Ignites Volume Defense
While the GT targets brand elevation, the resurrection of the standard YU7 is a direct volume defense mechanism. Lei admitted that canceling the standard edition in 2025 to simplify the product line was a strategic miscalculation, as utilizing higher-cost, long-range models failed to effectively compete with Tesla’s entry-level offerings.
The reinstated standard edition is tailored for urban commuters, featuring a 73kWh Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) battery on a 752V SiC platform, yielding a 643-kilometer CLTC range. By stripping away excess performance specifications—capping horsepower at 320 PS and acceleration at 5.9 seconds—Xiaomi has optimized its bill of materials to achieve the RMB 233,500 price point. This recalibration acknowledges a growing consumer fatigue with over-specification in the Chinese market, pivoting the battleground back to practical utility and cost-efficiency.
Poaching Talent Signals Manufacturing Maturation
The integration of Song Gang, who Xiaomi spent 18 months recruiting, highlights a critical phase in the company's automotive lifecycle: the shift from R&D breakthroughs to mass manufacturing stabilization.
Song’s transition from Tesla to Xiaomi validates the operational convergence between the two companies.
