XPeng Bets on Premium Design With New P7 Sedan, Secures 10,000 Pre-Orders in Minutes
XPeng Inc. is making a strategic wager on high-end design to reclaim its position in the premium electric vehicle market, unveiling a redesigned flagship P7 sedan that attracted over 10,000 pre-orders in under seven minutes, signaling strong initial interest despite an unannounced price.
The Chinese automaker opened what it calls “blind pre-orders” for the new vehicle immediately following its debut event, allowing customers to place a 99 yuan ($13.6) deposit to secure a 3,000 yuan discount on the final purchase. The rapid accumulation of 10,000 orders in just six minutes and 37 seconds indicates early market enthusiasm for the company’s new direction.
Chairman and CEO He Xiaopeng described the vehicle as a “Dream Car” with “no shortcomings,” explicitly stating it will not compete on price. The model is positioned as a “savior” intended to spearhead XPeng’s return to the premium segment, a role its predecessor once played in establishing the brand’s credentials in technology and design.
The strong pre-order figures offer an early validation of XPeng’s strategy to elevate brand perception. However, the ultimate success of the new P7 will depend on its final pricing and its ability to compete in a crowded market against established rivals like Tesla’s Model 3 and new entrants such as Xiaomi’s SU7.
A Strategic Pivot to Design
XPeng is shifting its core message from pure technology to aesthetics, under a new mantra of “Beauty first, technology leading.” At the launch event, He devoted more than half of the presentation to the car’s design, underscoring the strategic change. The vehicle is offered in six custom colors and features premium BASF Glasurit paint, used by luxury brands like Rolls-Royce, to enhance its visual appeal.
The sedan features a low-slung, wide-body profile with a length of 5,017mm and a wheelbase of 3,008mm. Design details aimed at a premium look include a 1.4-meter seamless front light bar, a flush-mounted illuminated logo, and hidden external sensors. An active rear spoiler deploys automatically at speeds above 80 km/h, while the interior combines sporty elements with technology, such as a gimbal-mounted central screen that physically turns toward the driver during voice interactions.
Advanced Tech Underpins Premium Push
While design takes center stage, the new P7 is equipped with XPeng’s top-tier technology. The vehicle is built on an 800V high-voltage platform and uses a 5C supercharging battery, enabling an official range of up to 820 kilometers.
The company’s traditional strength in intelligent driving remains a core selling point. The new P7 comes standard with three Turing AI chips, delivering 2,250 TOPS of computing power, among the highest in a production passenger car. It will also feature XPeng’s proprietary onboard large models for visual and language processing (VLA and VLM), positioning its advanced driver-assistance system (ADAS) as a key differentiator.
Positioning Against Key Rivals
On paper, the redesigned P7 is positioned to compete aggressively with other popular electric sport sedans, including the Tesla Model 3, Xiaomi SU7, and IM L6. The XPeng sedan is longer than its main competitors, offering more interior space. Its 0-100 km/h acceleration time is in the 3-second class, on par with the Model 3 Performance, while its official range figure is the highest among the group.
The P7’s primary technological advantage lies in its superior ADAS computing power and its early adoption of onboard large models. XPeng has also indicated that its advanced smart driving features will be available at no additional cost, a significant value proposition for potential buyers. The final pricing, expected to be announced this month, will be the decisive factor in its competitive standing.
The Road Ahead: Price and Execution
The initial launch has successfully generated significant market buzz, giving XPeng a strong start. The key challenge now shifts from generating interest to converting it into sustainable sales. The company's success will hinge on whether consumers perceive enough value in the enhanced design and technology to justify a premium price point.
Furthermore, XPeng’s ability to scale production and ensure that its delivery and service infrastructure can support a high-end customer experience will be critical. These factors, alongside the final price, will ultimately determine if the new P7 can successfully lead the company’s return to the premium market segment.
