Alibaba-Backed Optical Module Firm Tests HK IPO Market as AI Price Wars Squeeze Margins

Beijing Haiguang Xinzheng Technology, a silicon photonics optical module manufacturer backed by Alibaba and Xiaomi, has filed for a Hong Kong initial public offering, testing investor appetite for Tier-2 AI infrastructure plays grappling with severe margin compression.

The filing, marking the company’s third attempt at a public listing and its second in Hong Kong, exposes a structural paradox within the global AI hardware supply chain: exponential top-line growth no longer guarantees profitability. While Haiguang Xinzheng leveraged the 2026 boom in AI data center buildouts to drive revenue to RMB 1.22 billion (US$169.4 million) in 2025, its net loss widened 459% year-over-year to RMB 100 million.

Institutional investors are scrutinizing the prospectus as a bellwether for the mid-market optical module sector. The industry is currently executing a capital-intensive transition from 400G to 800G and 1.6T data transmission speeds, a cycle that disproportionately burdens smaller players attempting to unseat dominant incumbents while fending off aggressive domestic pricing strategies.

Squeezing Margins Expose Tier-2 Vulnerabilities

Haiguang Xinzheng’s financial trajectory illustrates the brutal economics of hardware components in the generative AI era. The company recorded a 163.9% compound annual growth rate (CAGR) in revenue from 2023 to 2025. However, overall gross margin contracted from 11.8% in 2024 to 9.0% in 2025. More critically, the gross margin for its core optical module business nearly halved, dropping from 12.4% to 6.7% over the same period.

The prospectus attributes this contraction to intensifying competition in the domestic high-speed optical receiver market, which has forced unit prices downward. Simultaneously, the relentless pace of technological iteration demanded higher capital expenditure. R&D expenses surged to RMB 104 million in 2025 from RMB 63.8 million a year earlier, highlighting the cost of maintaining parity in the 800G product cycle.

This margin deterioration stands in stark contrast to Tier-1 industry leaders who have successfully translated AI-driven volume into historic profits. In 2025, sector heavyweight Zhongji Innolight reported net profit of RMB 10.8 billion, while Eoptolink posted RMB 9.53 billion, underscoring a winner-takes-all dynamic where top-tier firms monopolize premium capacity and high-margin next-generation orders.

Leveraging Silicon Photonics to Challenge Incumbents

To differentiate itself from traditional transceiver assemblers, Haiguang Xinzheng is pitching its proprietary silicon photonics architecture. The company utilizes a "less-change CMOS" design that shares 12-inch wafer fabrication lines with conventional integrated circuits, bypassing the need for dedicated silicon photonics production facilities.

According to Frost & Sullivan data cited in the filing, this manufacturing strategy reduces chip tape-out costs by 30% to 40% compared to overseas alternatives, translating to a 20% to 30% reduction in overall module costs. This cost-arbitrage model allowed the company to become one of China's first mass deliverers of 800G AI optical modules in 2024.

Based on 2025 revenue, the company holds a 1.6% global market share in professional AI optical modules, ranking eighth worldwide and seventh domestically. However, translating this technological niche into sustainable cash flow remains the primary hurdle for the IPO's valuation modeling.

Concentrating Client Base Amplifies Execution Risks

The company's operational risks are further compounded by extreme customer concentration, a common but volatile characteristic of the AI infrastructure supply chain. Between 2023 and 2025, Haiguang Xinzheng’s top five clients accounted for 95.8%, 70.3%, and 78.7% of total revenue, respectively, with the largest single customer contributing 21.0% in 2025.

While securing hyperscaler and major equipment vendor contracts validates the company's delivery capabilities, it exposes revenue streams to abrupt demand shocks or vendor-switching as the industry migrates toward 1.6T, 3.2T, and emerging Co-Packaged Optics (CPO) solutions.

The IPO window is also crowding. A wave of supply chain challengers, including optical chipmaker Nazhen Tech and packaging equipment provider Lieqi Intelligent, are currently rushing the public markets. For Haiguang Xinzheng, the Hong Kong listing is less about capitalizing on the AI hype cycle and more about securing the critical liquidity needed to survive the impending industry consolidation.
