Biren Technology Surges in Hong Kong Debut, Marking 2026’s First Major Tech IPO
Chinese graphics processing unit (GPU) developer Biren Technology listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange on Thursday, opening with a surge that pushed its market capitalization past HK$100 billion. As the first significant initial public offering of 2026, the listing marks a pivotal moment for China’s domestic computing sector and tests investor appetite for "hard technology" assets amidst ongoing global supply chain reconfigurations.
The shares opened significantly above the offer price of HK$19.60, signaling robust market demand for domestic alternatives in the high-performance computing space. Founded in 2019 by former SenseTime president Zhang Wen, Biren has positioned itself as a critical player in China’s efforts to build independent computing infrastructure, specifically targeting the gap in general-purpose GPUs used for artificial intelligence and cloud computing.
The successful debut validates the long-term strategies of early backers who pivoted toward deep technology despite market volatility. Meridian Capital China, a key investor, secured its first major hard-tech exit with the listing, following a strategic shift in 2020 to focus on fundamental infrastructure over consumer internet applications. The firm’s returns on Biren underscore a broader trend where capital is increasingly flowing toward semiconductor and advanced manufacturing sectors.
Market analysts view the Biren IPO as a bellwether for the coming year, potentially unlocking a pipeline of specialized technology listings. With nearly 20 portfolio companies from firms like Meridian Capital China currently approaching public markets, 2026 is projected to be a significant year for exits in the artificial intelligence, robotics, and advanced materials sectors.
A Strategic Bet on Computing Infrastructure
The listing represents the culmination of a five-year development cycle for Biren Technology. The company was established with the specific goal of challenging global incumbents in the general-purpose GPU market. Its product line, including the BR100 series released in 2022, targets high-performance computing scenarios. The company has adopted a "1+1+N+X" platform strategy, focusing on a unified hardware architecture and software platform to support various chip derivatives.
For Meridian Capital China, the investment began in June 2020, during a period of uncertainty. The venture capital firm, previously known for digital and media investments, made Biren its flagship project for its sixth growth fund. Founding managing partner Ji Wei increased the firm’s initial commitment to RMB 70 million yuan (US$9.6 million), making it their largest single investment of that year.
The investment decision was driven by a top-down analysis of China’s technology stack led by partner Zhang Gaonan. Recognizing that the domestic market required foundational computing power to support the upper layers of the digital economy, the firm identified GPUs as a critical bottleneck. Biren’s leadership, including CTO Hong Zhou—a veteran of Nvidia and Huawei—provided the technical credibility required for the capital-intensive venture.
Navigating Market Skepticism
Biren’s path to the public market was not without challenges. Following the launch of its first chip, the sector faced skepticism regarding commercial viability and the ability to mass-produce advanced semiconductors under tightening geopolitical restrictions. During a liquidity crunch in 2022, when other investors hesitated, Meridian Capital China doubled down on its position.
To validate the company's health before the follow-on investment, Zhang Gaonan conducted on-site due diligence at Biren’s warehouses. The physical verification of approximately RMB 1 billion (US$137 million) in chip inventory and tangible order vouchers provided the assurance needed to inject an additional RMB 50 million (US$6.9 million). This counter-cyclical funding proved crucial for the company’s stability during the industry's "capital winter."
Expanding the Deep Tech Ecosystem
The Biren IPO highlights the maturation of China’s "hard tech" investment landscape. Meridian Capital China has now deployed capital into over 50 such companies, accounting for half of its total portfolio. These include investments in
VastaiTech, a graphics and AI chip provider that recently completed IPO counseling, and DeepRobotics, a quadruped robot manufacturer that secured Pre-IPO funding in late 2025.
The shift reflects a broader alignment with national strategic priorities. In 2025 alone, Meridian Capital China executed 42 transactions, with over 90% focused on hard technology sectors ranging from embodied artificial intelligence to quantum computing. Notably, the firm invested in Origin Quantum in 2022, viewing quantum computing as the next strategic frontier following the maturation of traditional semiconductor technologies.
Looking ahead, the successful float of Biren Technology is expected to accelerate exit activities for late-stage tech companies. Meridian Capital China reports that nearly 20 of its portfolio companies are currently in the listing process, with expectations for robust activity throughout 2026.
