BrainCo Raises RMB 2 Billion in Challenge to Musk’s Neuralink as BCI Sector Heats Up
BrainCo has secured approximately RMB 2 billion (US$276 million) in fresh capital, marking the second-largest financing round in the global brain-computer interface (BCI) sector, trailing only Elon Musk’s Neuralink Corp. The deal cements the status of the Hangzhou-based "unicorn" as a primary competitor in the race to commercialize neurotechnology.
The financing round attracted a high-profile roster of backers, including IDG Capital and Walden International, founded by Lip-Bu Tan. Strategic investors from the industrial supply chain also participated, including Lens Technology and Lingyi iTech, alongside support from family offices in Hong Kong and the United States.
News of the deal has ignited a rally in related equities, with multiple A-share listed healthcare and technology stocks surging by their daily limits for two consecutive sessions. The capital influx comes as analysts predict 2026 will be a pivotal year for BCI commercialization, shifting the technology from experimental medical use cases into broader artificial intelligence applications.
While Neuralink remains the valuation leader following its 2025 funding round, BrainCo’s substantial raise highlights the competitive intensity in the non-invasive segment of the market. The funding also follows market speculation from late last year regarding BrainCo's potential initial public offering in either Hong Kong or mainland China, positioning the company for further expansion.
Star-Studded Investor Lineup
The latest capital injection involves a diverse group of strategic and financial heavyweights. In addition to IDG and Walden International, the investor list includes semiconductor giant Will Semiconductor, data center operator Range Technology, hotel operator H World Group, and education technology firm TAL Education Group.
Founded in February 2015 by Han Bicheng and incubated at the Harvard Innovation Labs, BrainCo focuses primarily on non-invasive BCI technology. Its product portfolio currently includes smart bionic limbs and sleep aid devices.
Data from Tianyancha shows BrainCo’s robust fundraising trajectory. After early angel and Pre‑A rounds in 2016, the company closed a US$400 million Series A in 2019. In 2025, it secured a US$30 million Pre‑Bfrom Dowstone Technology and a US$20 million Series B from 37 Interactive Entertainment. Last August, rumors emerged that BrainCo was raising about US$100 million in a pre‑IPO round at a valuation exceeding US$1.3 billion.
The Commercialization Race
The global BCI landscape continues to be dominated by Neuralink, which reached a valuation of US$9 billion after completing its Series E financing in 2025. Elon Musk recently stated that Neuralink intends to begin "mass production" of its BCI devices in 2026, alongside the rollout of highly streamlined, automated surgical procedures.
Kaiyuan Securities noted in a recent report that these developments confirm 2026 as the inaugural year for BCI commercialization. The brokerage expects the technology to expand rapidly from essential medical needs to broader AI integration.
Market Ripple Effects
The financing news has triggered significant movement in China’s capital markets. Over the past two days, BCI-related stocks including Innovation Medical Management, Apon Medical Technology, Xiangyu Medical, Stonehill Technology, and Medlander Medical Technology have all hit their daily trading limits.
Several listed companies are also maneuvering to capture market share in the nascent sector:
- Shenzhen YHLO Biotech announced a strategic framework agreement with Shenzhen Brain-Machine Starlink Technology. YHLO plans to utilize its sales channels in emergency care, brain disease diagnosis, and pediatrics to empower the market expansion of Brain-Machine Starlink’s products.
- Cofoe Medical Technology confirmed on an investor interaction platform that it views the BCI track favorably. In late 2025, the company acquired a 12.45% stake in Lizhi Intelligence, a developer of non-invasive BCI robots, anticipating synergies with its rehabilitation and respiratory support product lines.
Investment Outlook
In a research note dated January 6, Kaiyuan Securities advised that while the BCI sector is in the early stages of commercialization, the market is currently driven by thematic investing. The firm suggested investors monitor benchmarks in the U.S. market and the progress of invasive clinical trials.
The analysts distinguished between the two main technological paths: while some invasive products have seen rapid clinical progress and regulatory approval for neuromodulation, non-invasive products—like those developed by BrainCo—have a clear path to commercialization and significant revenue potential. The report also highlighted the scarcity value of upstream assets, specifically in software, hardware (chips and electrodes), and experimental materials.
