BYD to Unveil Electric Kei Car for Japanese Market

BYD is set to launch a new all-electric mini-vehicle in Japan, targeting the country's unique "kei" car segment. The model is expected to make its official debut at the Tokyo Motor Show later in 2025.

The vehicle adopts the classic boxy design popular among Japanese kei cars, featuring a long wheelbase and short overhangs to maximize interior volume and battery capacity. Images show a floating roof, sliding rear doors for access in tight urban spaces, and distinctive circular headlamps and taillights. An additional triangular window on the A-pillar aims to improve driver visibility.

Engineered for the Japanese market, the interior features a right-hand drive layout with design elements similar to BYD's "Ocean" series. The cabin is equipped with a multi-function steering wheel, a floating digital instrument cluster, and a central infotainment screen. A dual A-pillar design is incorporated to further reduce blind spots.

The electric kei car will be powered by a 20 kWh battery, delivering a range of 180 kilometers under the WLTC standard. It will also feature a heat pump for efficient climate control and support 100 kW fast charging.

Pricing is expected to start at approximately 2.5 million Japanese yen, or about 133,000 yuan (US$18,500). The model is positioned to compete with established electric kei cars such as the Nissan Sakura and the Mitsubishi eK X EV, where its pricing may offer a competitive advantage.
