CATL Unveils Four Battery Systems Targeting 6-Minute Charging and 1,500km Range
Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Limited (CATL) announced four advanced battery systems at its Super Tech Day event in Beijing, introducing technologies that enable 6-minute charging times and sedans capable of 1,500-kilometer ranges—metrics positioning pure electric vehicles to surpass traditional combustion engines on convenience.
The world's largest EV battery manufacturer revealed third-generation variants of its Shenxing and Qilin battery platforms, alongside upgraded Xiaoyao hybrid cells and a commercialization timeline for sodium-ion technology. Chairman Zeng Yuqun emphasized that despite intensifying competition in 2026, innovation quality and validation rigor—not speed alone—will determine which Chinese technologies gain global traction. CATL's RMB 100 billion (13.9 billion) decade-long R&D investment, including RMB 20 billion (2.8 billion) in 2025, underpins this approach.
Chief Scientist Wu Kai outlined CATL's multi-chemistry strategy: lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries prioritize ultra-fast charging as energy density nears theoretical limits, ternary lithium systems compete on energy density benchmarks, and sodium-ion cells target extreme temperatures and stationary storage. By Q1 2026, CATL batteries powered 47.7% of China's EV sales—equating to one in two vehicles sold domestically.
Third-Gen Shenxing Achieves 15C Peak Charging
The third-generation Shenxing LFP battery delivers 10C equivalent charging speeds with 15C peak rates, replenishing 10%-98% state-of-charge in 6 minutes 27 seconds under normal conditions. At minus-30 degrees Celsius, 20%-98% charging requires just over 9 minutes. Chief Technology Officer Gao Huan attributed performance longevity to internal resistance averaging 0.25 milliohms—50% below competing ultra-fast-charge products—and SEI gene-directed editing technology minimizing interface reaction impedance. Cell shoulder cooling and precision temperature monitoring enable 1,000 ultra-fast charge cycles while retaining over 90% capacity.
However, Gao directly challenged LFP's weight penalty, stating vehicles above RMB 250,000 ($34,700) using LFP represent "downgrading." The comment signals CATL's push toward ternary chemistries in premium segments.
Qilin Batteries Target 1,500km Range at 350Wh/kg
The third-generation Qilin ternary lithium battery achieves 280Wh/kg gravimetric density and 600Wh/L volumetric density, enabling 1,000km-plus range while capping a 125kWh pack at 625 kilograms—255kg lighter than equivalent LFP systems. This weight reduction, equivalent to three adults, improves acceleration, handling, and braking response while lowering consumption. A track-focused Qilin variant outputs 3,000kW peak discharge, more than doubling predecessor performance, with equivalent 10C charging maintained.
CATL's "Condensed Matter" Qilin battery variant reaches 350Wh/kg gravimetric and 760Wh/L volumetric density, enabling executive sedans to achieve 1,500km range and full-size SUVs 1,000km—distances exceeding Beijing-to-Nanjing highway trips even accounting for 30% high-speed consumption penalties. Gao framed this as "EVs overturning combustion vehicles" and "today's EVs surpassing yesterday's." The condensed electrolyte system eliminates liquid leakage and combustion risks, with composite current collectors enabling self-fusing protection. Gao declared "no Qilin, no premium."
Hybrid Batteries Reach 600km Pure-Electric Range
CATL's second-generation Xiaoyao super-hybrid battery achieves 500km pure-electric range with 10C equivalent charging in standard form. Energy density reaches 230Wh/kg—20% above LFP alternatives and yielding 15% range gains. A ternary variant extends pure-electric range to 600km and combined range to 2,000km. Gao positioned 400km as the "passing grade" for hybrids, with 600km representing "the new competitive threshold."
Power output hits 1,500kW at full charge and maintains 1,200kW at 20% state-of-charge, triple the 350kW needed to escape desert "chicken hole" off-road traps. Armor-grade bottom coating withstands 1,500 joules—10 times Chinese national standards and equivalent to standard rifle impacts—while sealing tolerates 2-meter submersion exceeding 200 hours.
Sodium-Ion Production and 4,000-Station Charging Network
CATL confirmed its sodium-ion battery will enter mass production in Q4 2026 after resolving four industrialization challenges: extreme moisture control, hard carbon gas generation, aluminum foil bonding, and self-forming anode scalability. Yang Jun, general manager of battery swapping, announced plans to deploy 4,000 integrated ultra-fast-charging and battery-swap stations by year-end 2026, covering nearly 190 cities and 12 vertical/11 horizontal highway corridors. The network targets 100,000 shared charging facilities by end-2028.
Chocolate battery-swap stations now integrate Shenxing ultra-fast chargers across passenger and commercial truck lineups, achieving "swappable or chargeable" flexibility. Shared transformers and charging modules reduce energy conversion losses 13 percentage points versus market-standard storage-equipped chargers, with equipment utilization reaching 85%—triple storage-charger service capacity at one-fifth infrastructure cost. A new 75kWh Chocolate No. 26 battery supports 800V architectures across B-to-C-segment vehicles, with larger capacities forthcoming.
First-wave partners include Changan Automobile, Chery Automobile, GAC Group, Seres Group, SAIC-GM-Wuling, and BAIC Group, signaling cross-OEM standardization momentum.
Zeng emphasized that scientific rigor—manifested through first-principles exploration and continuous investment—defines CATL's "most important commitment" as competition accelerates. With cumulative installations reaching 25.84 million vehicles through February 2026, CATL's technology roadmap spans product performance to infrastructure deployment, marking a transition from "point breakthroughs to full-scenario coverage."
