Chinese EV Makers Surge in France as BEV Market Share Hits Record High

Chinese automakers are rapidly expanding their footprint in France, capitalizing on a record-breaking surge in electric vehicle demand that is reshaping one of Europe’s largest auto markets. While the overall French market saw modest growth in October, brands like BYD and MG posted triple-digit and near-triple-digit sales gains, starkly outperforming legacy competitors and signaling a significant competitive shift.

The latest data for October 2025 shows a market in transition. New car registrations rose 2.9% year-on-year to 139,513 vehicles, marking a third consecutive month of growth. However, this recovery is powered almost entirely by the electric segment. Sales of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) soared by 63.2%, capturing a record 24.4% market share, up from 15.4% in the same period last year.

This accelerating EV adoption provided a fertile ground for Chinese brands. BYD’s sales skyrocketed by 123.7%, while MG saw its volume jump 90.1%. Their rapid gains come as the broader market remains 26.2% below pre-pandemic levels from October 2019, underscoring how these new entrants are successfully capturing demand in the market’s primary growth segment.

The pivot to electrification is leaving traditional gasoline and diesel cars behind. Sales of gasoline-powered cars plummeted by 26.5%, with their market share shrinking to just 19.2%. Diesel models fared even worse, accounting for a mere 4.2% of new registrations. This structural decline highlights the challenge for incumbents still reliant on internal combustion engine technology.

EVs Drive Market Transformation

The defining trend in the French auto market is the decisive consumer shift toward electric and hybrid powertrains. The 63.2% jump in pure-electric car sales was the core driver of October's overall market growth. In contrast, plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) saw a 14.4% decline in sales, suggesting a consumer preference for fully electric solutions.

Conventional hybrids remain a dominant force, with sales growing 7.5% to secure a commanding 42.2% market share. However, the explosive growth of BEVs indicates that the future of the market is increasingly battery-powered, creating a critical opening for EV-focused manufacturers to gain traction.

Chinese Brands Gain Significant Ground

Chinese automakers were the standout performers in October, turning their EV expertise into substantial market share gains. MG ranked 13th among all brands, with sales of 3,112 units, a 90.1% increase from the previous year. The brand has successfully established an image for value and design among European consumers.

Its flagship MG ZS model was a major contributor, with sales increasing nearly fourfold year-on-year to 1,313 units. This performance allowed the ZS to enter France's top-25 monthly model sales chart for the first time, positioning it as one of the most competitive Chinese electric SUVs in the market. Meanwhile, BYD continued to expand its influence, with sales reaching 1,172 units, representing a 123.7% surge and securing a 0.8% market share.

Mixed Fortunes for European Incumbents

The performance of established European automakers was uneven, reflecting their varying success in navigating the electric transition. Renault Group maintained its top position with 24,882 vehicles sold, a 17% increase, driven by new models like the all-electric Renault 5. The Renault 5 alone climbed to sixth place in model rankings with a record 3.3% market share, becoming a symbol of EV adoption in its home market.

Other legacy brands faced headwinds. Peugeot, though second in sales, saw its volume decline by 3.5%. Dacia’s sales also fell 6.4%. Toyota experienced a sharp 23.5% drop, largely due to a high comparison base from the previous year. The German premium brands were also divided, with BMW’s sales falling by nearly 20% while Audi’s grew by almost 20%. This divergence underscores that brand loyalty alone is no longer sufficient; success now hinges on offering compelling and competitive electric models.
