Chinese Short Drama Apps Dominate Overseas Revenue Rankings, With Single Platform Generating $6 Billion in 2025
The overseas short drama market maintained robust momentum in 2025, with total revenue surpassing US$3.2 billion and downloads exceeding 1.2 billion—both marking substantial year-over-year growth. Chinese developers virtually monopolized the top 20 revenue rankings, with ReelShort alone generating approximately 4.3 billion yuan (US$600 million) during the year.
The market's expansion has attracted diverse players beyond traditional content publishers, with gaming companies and social media developers emerging as significant competitors. Industry leaders are now exploring AI-powered animated dramas as the next growth frontier, while simultaneously expanding into emerging markets across Latin America, Southeast Asia, and the Middle East to capture untapped user bases.
Revenue concentration remains heavily skewed toward developed markets, particularly the United States, which accounted for over $1.5 billion—nearly half of the global overseas short drama market. However, emerging markets are demonstrating rapid growth in user acquisition, with India-focused platforms collectively driving four local developers onto the download charts.
The sector's rapid expansion has also highlighted operational challenges, particularly regarding cross-border payment processing, revenue collection, and regulatory compliance. Companies face multiple deductions including platform fees, distribution costs, advertising expenses, taxes, and foreign exchange losses before receiving final proceeds.
Network Literature Companies Lead Revenue Rankings
Traditional online literature and new media publishers constitute the primary force in overseas short drama expansion. Maple Interactive, incubated by China Literature Limited though now independently operated, secured the top position with ReelShort, which generated nearly 4.3 billion yuan (US$600 million) in 2025 revenue alone. The platform's cumulative revenue has exceeded 6.8 billion yuan (US$950 million), with over 80% contributed by European and American markets—the United States alone accounting for approximately 62%.
ReelShort's success stems from consistently producing localized content targeting popular themes including billionaire romance, elite family marriages, and werewolf narratives. The company has established a relatively mature production and talent development system, including forming local scriptwriting teams, signing exclusive actor contracts, and launching "Reeltalk," a short variety show featuring actor interviews, behind-the-scenes footage, and industry insights. The platform is expanding beyond its core Western markets into Asia, with South Korea emerging as a key strategic region where multiple localized productions have already launched.
China Literature Limited operates multiple overseas short drama applications beyond its ReelShort stake. FlareFlow, launched in April 2025, achieved respectable performance with revenue exceeding 300 million yuan ($42 million), ranking tenth among overseas short drama apps. The application experienced significant revenue growth during Q3 2025, substantially boosting the parent company's quarterly revenue.
Other established content companies including Dianzhong Technology, New Reading Era, Malt Culture, and iReader Technology have leveraged their expertise in online literature and digital media to capture substantial overseas market share.
Gaming Companies Achieve Breakthrough Success
Kunlun Worldwide exemplifies the late-mover advantage among gaming-originated competitors. Its Dramawave platform, launched in late 2024, maintained rapid growth throughout 2025, with monthly revenue reaching nearly 200 million yuan ($28 million) at its peak. The application demonstrates strong monetization capabilities in developed markets led by the United States, Japan, and South Korea, while establishing growth momentum in emerging markets including Thailand, Brazil, and Indonesia.
Hangzhou Zhuangwan, known for expertise in advertising placement across social media, graphics, and game distribution, entered short drama operations in 2022. Its FlickReels application experienced explosive growth in 2025, with revenue surging 2,300% year-over-year. WebEye, another gaming-background company that previously launched casual game "Love Eliminate" attracting hundreds of millions of users and operates game distribution platform ModooPlay with reported top-performing titles generating 1 billion yuan in revenue, has secured market position through its ShortsWave platform.
AI-Powered Animated Dramas Emerge as Next Frontier
Industry participants are actively pursuing new growth opportunities, with AI-powered animated dramas—animated short dramas produced using artificial intelligence—potentially emerging as the next major trend. The format began gaining traction in 2025, attracting early investments from ByteDance, Tencent, Alibaba, and Kuaishou, all of which continue expanding their commitments. Recruitment platforms show increasing numbers of companies hiring for animated drama positions, including gaming companies such as NetEase, Bianfeng Network, Shenzhen Baoliang, Lingchuang Interactive Entertainment, Qingzhou Entertainment, Gaore Games and Wuhan Duobite.
Leading short drama companies including Maple Interactive and Kunlun Worldwide are closely monitoring AI-animated drama developments. Maple Interactive has begun developing related content, while Kunlun Worldwide launched an animation channel on its DramaWave platform covering creative and fantasy themes, reportedly receiving positive user feedback. Kunlun Worldwide stated that AI advancement will continuously generate new content formats similar to animated dramas, and users historically demonstrate high acceptance and enthusiasm for innovative entertainment content, suggesting significant dividend potential in this sector.
Emerging Markets Drive User Growth
While revenue remains concentrated in core markets, short drama developers are increasingly focused on incremental opportunities in emerging regions. India's market has grown substantially in recent years, single-handedly propelling four Indian developers' short drama applications onto download rankings, including KuKu TV, Story TV, QuickTV, and DashReels, each deriving over 90% of downloads from the Indian market. Latin American countries including Mexico, Colombia, and Brazil, Middle Eastern markets particularly Turkey, and Southeast Asian regions are also quietly rising.
In-app advertising (IAA)-focused short drama applications enjoy particular popularity in these emerging markets. Platforms including Kunlun Worldwide's FreeReels, ByteDance's Melolo, Chengdu-based RapidTV, and Nanjing Wangyan's Meloshort primarily employ IAA models, attracting substantial user bases in Indonesia, Brazil, Colombia, and the Philippines. Melolo derives over 70% of its users from the Indonesian market alone.
Some short drama applications adjust monetization approaches based on different markets' user payment behaviors. MiniShorts reportedly implemented targeted strategies, emphasizing in-app purchase (IAP) models in European and American regions while prioritizing IAA in Southeast Asia. This approach helps platforms consolidate revenue fundamentals while achieving user base expansion.
Cross-Border Payment Challenges Persist
Despite the overseas short drama market's explosive growth, developers face operational challenges, with cross-border revenue collection and payment efficiency emerging as primary concerns. Overseas earnings must pass through multiple checkpoints including platform commissions, distribution shares, advertising costs, taxes, account management fees, foreign exchange losses, and banking service charges. The more checkpoints short drama developers navigate, the lower their final proceeds, with lengthy settlement cycles further complicating matters and compliance issues creating additional headaches.
While these challenges appear inevitable for overseas short drama teams, solutions exist including hiring professional overseas distribution teams or utilizing legitimate third-party payment platforms. Given the difficulty estimating costs for the former approach, third-party payment platforms may represent a more practical option for many operators.
