Dreame Technology, a Chinese smart cleaning appliance maker, has made a bold foray into chip design with the launch of its semiconductor brand "NXMIND", challenging industry norms and reigniting debates about the viability of hardware firms venturing into high-stakes semiconductor development.

On March 11 at the AWE 2026 Chip Industry Summit, the company unveiled an ambitious portfolio spanning five computing tracks: smartphone processors, 2nm autonomous driving chips, robot SoCs, a space-based computing network, and personal super AI computers—an unprecedented expansion for a business rooted in robotic vacuums and floor washers.

The centerpiece is a 2nm autonomous driving chip with 2000 TOPS of computing power, claimed to be three times the industry mainstream, while its first robotic chip has already entered mass production for integration into Dreame's own devices. The move reflects a broader trend among Chinese consumer tech firms to reduce reliance on external chip suppliers.

Yet the gamble carries significant risks, exemplified by the 2023 collapse of OPPO's Zheku semiconductor unit, which burned through over RMB 10 billion (US$1.39 billion) in investment before shutting down amid commercial and technical challenges.

The Strategic Pivot: From Appliances to Core Chips

Dreame's leap into semiconductors stems from a critical business need: breaking free from off-the-shelf chips to build differentiation. Founded in 2017 as part of Xiaomi's ecosystem, the company has expanded to robotic mowers, hair dryers, and personal care devices, but disparate chips across products hindered integration and capped performance.

This bottleneck mirrors industry trends: vertical integration of chips, software, and algorithms—epitomized by Apple's M-series chips—has become a key competitive advantage. Chinese tech giants like Huawei and Xiaomi have pursued semiconductor self-sufficiency, and Dreame aims to follow suit to avoid commodity competition.“The times and tracks have changed, and the right to define is shifting,”said Fu Haiyang, head of NXMIND.“They defined the last decade; the next belongs to those who dare to redefine the computing world.”

Dreame's product scale—sold in over 120 countries—provides a foundation: it has the volume to amortize R&D costs and scenario data to optimize specialized chips, particularly for robotics.

Ambition vs. Reality: Feasibility of the Chip Portfolio

Dreame's five-track strategy mixes pragmatism and vision. Its“Tianqiong”robotic chips are the surest bet: already in mass production, they integrate multi-core CPU, NPU, and MCU to support home navigation, aligning perfectly with its core business and enabling immediate product integration.

In contrast, the 2nm autonomous driving chip and Chixiao 01 smartphone processor face steep barriers. The former targets L4 autonomy but Dreame only entered automotive manufacturing in August 2025, with no vehicles launched. The latter competes with entrenched players like Qualcomm and Apple, which have decades of technical and supply chain advantages.

The space computing center—aimed at deploying 200 million satellites—and personal super AI computer are more visionary than practical, requiring breakthroughs in manufacturing and application scenarios.

Risks and Market Impact

The Zheku debacle offers critical lessons: semiconductors need billions in upfront investment and 5-10 years to mature, clashing with consumer tech's 12-18 month product cycles. Spreading resources across five tracks could dilute Dreame's focus, a mistake Zheku made by pursuing multiple chip types simultaneously.

For investors, the pivot is high-risk, high-reward. Success in robotic chips could drive margin expansion, but sustained losses from underperforming tracks may weigh on finances. It also signals a shift in China's consumer tech sector, where product competition is giving way to battles over core technologies.

Dreame's advantage lies in specialized chips, not general-purpose processors. Prioritizing robotic chips while treating other initiatives as long-term research could help it avoid Zheku's fate. As the industry watches, the question remains: can this appliance maker defy the odds, or will its chip gamble become another cautionary tale of ambition outpacing pragmatism?
