Geely Acquires Stake in Renault's Brazilian Unit to Expand South American Presence
China's Geely is acquiring a 26.4% stake in Renault SA's Brazilian operations as the automakers deepen their partnership to expand in South America, the companies said Monday.
The deal gives Geely access to Renault's production and distribution network in Brazil, while Renault secures higher capacity utilization at its Curitiba plant and gains access to a Geely vehicle platform to strengthen its low and zero-emission car lineup. Financial terms were not disclosed.
The partnership marks Renault's latest effort to grow beyond Europe through technology and manufacturing alliances. The French automaker has signed agreements with Qualcomm Inc., Alphabet Inc.'s Google, and Geely across multiple markets, including South Korea.
For Geely, the stake in Renault do Brasil provides a foothold in Latin America as Chinese automakers expand globally. The move comes as Chinese manufacturers increasingly compete in Europe with affordable models, a segment traditionally dominated by Renault.
The deal underscores how established automakers are forging partnerships to share costs and technology amid the industry's shift toward electric vehicles and increasing competition from Chinese rivals.
