Seyond Surges in Hong Kong Debut as SPAC Merger Validates Tech Listings

Seyond, a developer of image-grade LiDAR technology, saw its shares jump significantly on its first day of trading in Hong Kong, marking a rare victory for the Special Purpose Acquisition Company (SPAC) mechanism in the Asian financial hub. The listing, completed through a merger with TechStar Acquisition Corporation, establishes Seyond as the first hard-technology company to list on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange (HKEX) via a "De-SPAC" transaction.

Shares of the company opened sharply higher on December 10, rising more than 60% during the session and pushing its market capitalization above HK20billion(US20billion(US2.57 billion). The strong debut signals a potential turning point for Hong Kong’s SPAC regime, which has seen limited activity compared to the frenzied boom and subsequent cooling observed in US markets.

The listing underscores a renewed appetite among investors for high-growth Chinese technology assets, particularly those embedded in the electric vehicle (EV) supply chain. By utilizing the De-SPAC route with TechStar—backed by Zero2IPO Holdings and other institutional promoters—Seyond bypassed the volatility of a traditional initial public offering (IPO), securing capital certainty in a complex market environment.

For the HKEX, the successful float serves as a proof-of-concept for its stringent SPAC regulations. The alliance between the financing vehicle and the LiDAR maker highlights the market's capacity to facilitate exits for mature "deep tech" startups, shifting the narrative away from concerns over liquidity and valuation to a focus on industrial scalability and technological commercialization.

A Strategic De-SPAC Transaction

The merger represents the culmination of a two-year process led by TechStar, a SPAC listed in December 2022 with promoters including CNB Capital and Zero2IPO Capital. The De-SPAC model allowed for a transparent valuation and controlled timeline, offering an alternative to the traditional IPO process which can be susceptible to short-term market fluctuations.

The transaction structure involved a complex alignment of interests. The deal coordinated needs across Seyond’s founders and early backers, TechStar’s sponsors, 70 SPAC investors, and new strategic capital. To facilitate the merger, the entities secured HK$553 million in Private Investment in Public Equity (PIPE) funding from investors including Huangshan Construction Investment and Huagai Capital. The deal valued Seyond at approximately HK$11.7 billion prior to the market surge.

Ni Zhengdong, Chairman of Zero2IPO Holdings, described the merger as a "bold and successful attempt" under Hong Kong's SPAC listing regime. He noted that the transaction represents a mutual achievement for hard technology innovation and capital market innovation, setting a precedent for future listings in the sector.

From Silicon Valley to Mass Production

Founded in 2016 by former Baidu executives Bao Junwei and Li Yimin, Seyond has focused on solving the "impossible triangle" of LiDAR technology: high performance, low cost, and mass producibility. Unlike competitors who initially focused on 905nm wavelength technology, Seyond prioritized 1550nm technology, which offers longer detection ranges and better interference resistance but poses higher R&D barriers.

The company’s strategic turning point occurred in 2020 when Nio selected Seyond’s flagship sensor for its ET7 sedan. The partnership validated Seyond’s technology and necessitated the construction of automated production lines in Suzhou. Following the vehicle's delivery in 2022, Seyond’s revenue surged 1,341% year-on-year. The company now claims to be the only provider capable of mass-producing both 1550nm and 905nm LiDAR solutions, shipping over 230,000 automotive-grade units in 2024.

The company’s ability to scale has attracted a robust roster of backers over its nine-year history, including Temasek, IDG Capital, and Joy Capital. "The auto industry is transitioning from electrification to intelligence," said Liu Erhai, Founding Partner of Joy Capital. "Seyond’s ability to achieve mass production with high-performance technology plays a key role in the commercialization of smart driving in China."

Revaluing Chinese Tech Assets

Seyond’s listing comes amid a broader reassessment of Chinese technology assets by global investors. In 2025, the HKEX has seen a resurgence in activity, with significant listings from sectors ranging from renewable energy to biotech. The market is witnessing a shift where Chinese startups are increasingly viewed not just as manufacturing alternatives, but as innovation leaders in fields like autonomous driving and artificial intelligence.

Investors note that the successful De-SPAC indicates that high-quality assets can still command liquidity and premium valuations in Hong Kong. "The world is re-evaluating Chinese tech assets," noted one investor, pointing to the rebound in sentiment.

With a product matrix now covering both high-end performance models and cost-sensitive vehicles priced around RMB 100,000 yuan (US$13,800), Seyond is positioned to leverage the capital raised to expand its global footprint. As the second-largest global player in ADAS LiDAR revenue, the company’s performance will likely serve as a bellwether for other hardware technology firms queuing to list in Hong Kong.
